45 years ago today, Led Zeppelin performed for the first time
I want to make a point.
All I ever hear is "Omg Cher sampled Oh My Darling Clementine, what a rip off, so unoriginal" but is she the first artist to SAMPLE another song? No. Sampling is legal, sampling is perfectly fine as the label have to get permission to use it. If she hadn't gotten permission she would've been taken to court and would've been sued. I made this point to someone and their reply was "but the writers of OMDC aren't alive anymore" that could possibly be the case, but the rights would be passed on to someone else.
Many songs out there have sampled songs. The use of the drum introduction from Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" is in songs by the Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mike Oldfield, Rob Dougan, Coldcut, Depeche Mode and Erasure, and the guitar riffs from Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" is in Tone Lōc's "Funky Cold Medina".
Rihanna sampled Tainted Love by Soft Cell in SOS, this song became her first number 1.
Madonna sampled Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! by Abba in her song Hung Up, it became number 1 on 20 different charts, was platinum numerous times and went Gold in Germany.
Kanye West has sampled over 200 songs including We Are The Champions by Queen in his song Champions. Mr Rockefeller by Bette Midler in his song Last Call, My Funny Valentine by Etta James in Addiction. He sample Diamonds are Forever by Shirley Bassey, Ms Jackson by Outkast and I Smoke, I Drank by Body Head Bangers Feat. Lil Boosie and Young Bleed for his song Diamonds From Sierra Leone.
Many other artists have sampled songs over and over again, sampling is nothing new and Cher sampling one song for her song doesn't mean she lacks originality or that she's "stolen" it. To see more samples go to this website: http://www.whosampled.com
So next time someone wants to say that it's "oh so bad" that Cher used OMDC in her song, they need to go checking their facts and then they can see that sampling has been going longer than some of us have been alive.
