Medicine Ball Caravan (1971) was the sequel to Woodstock. Warner Brothers took several of their recording artists and hired a large group of hippies - mostly from Wavy Gravy’s Hog Farm commune - to tour the country in a caravan of busses with a huge stash of marijuana, LSD, and speed. They hired the hip San Francisco disc jockey Tom Donahue to organize a series of concerts and a French cinema verite film crew to document the pilgrimage. A slogan on the side of one of the vehicles announced: “We Have Come For Your Daughters.”
A few hours into the tour most of the busses broke down. The drivers decided to drop acid and drink wine while the filmmakers captured the chaos. The caravan spent their first night camped out by Mono Lake while the hippie mechanics worked around the clock. The crowd of longhairs had their first breakfast of the road trip at Kellogg’s Cafe in Lee Vining, California.
Both the tour and the subsequent concert film (which was edited by Martin Scorsese) was considered a disaster. Today it is one of the rarest films in the entire Warner Brothers library. I would kill to see a clean print from beginning to end.
Frisky Foal by Cheryl Strahl Via Flickr: The word "exuberance" comes to mind with this image of a energetic foal running through the meadow. Wild Mustangs in the Eastern Sierra near Lee Vining and Mono Lake. From affection to sparring to just having fun, these beautiful horses were a pleasure to watch and photograph!
