GOOD SOUNDS:
27. THE SMITH STREET BAND
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia is The Smith Street Band! An absolutely awe-inspiring (and totally legit) rock band that brings a ferociously introspective edge (Iyrically and melodically). Although a bit more somber at times, but it doesn’t slow down this band’s enthusiastic rhythms & hooks (a folksy indie punk rock vibe with Australian charisma).
Wil Wagner’s every-day man sensibility (as a lyricist) is refined with a more high-brow poetry than your average punk band’s sentiments. There are legitimate moments of brilliance in all aspects of The Smith Street Band in terms of conceptual cohesiveness, explosive guitars & rhythms, and a peaceful softer side (internalizing anxieties, fears, victories, relationships, life lessons, and personal courage). Wagner’s enormous heart is inherent in his monumental howls & roars alongside the band’s unstoppable musicianship (Fitzy on Bass, Lee Hartney on Guitar, and Chris Cowburn on Drums).
This band is one of my all-time favorites I’ve ever seen live (saw ‘em up in Portland, Oregon years ago). I lost my sh!t when I saw them play live - Absolutely AWESOME! Do yourself a favor and check out an album by them, “Throw Me in The River” - absolute masterpiece!
Happy Listening!
