Liam stood in the back of the crowded ballroom, a scotch in his hand as he watched the attendees of this year's UN Gala. Of course, it had to be held in New York City, the place he loved and hated equally the same. Hated may be too strong a word for the city that never sleeps, suffering may be a better fit and Liam was suffering. It had been a year since the social season and his entire world came crashing down around him. The scandal, the engagement to Madeline, her name being drug through the mud, and she handled it all with her head held high. But the one thing that stood in his way of true happiness was Tariq, who eventually was found, six months after he needed to be found. He gave his statement, clearing her name but it was too late, Riley was gone.
He watched as a couple stole a quiet moment off to the side of the room and he felt the chains on his heart tighten. It was time to go. Quickly crossing the room, he set his empty glass on the table and stepped out into the night air. "Would you like me to call the car around, your majesty?" Fredrick, one of the royal guards asked.
"No. I think a nice walk is needed. Thank you, Fredrick."
Fredrick nodded and fell a few paces back as Liam maneuvered the bustling streets. He thought about the last time he was in the City. Riley, Drake, and Maxwell had flown to Los Angeles to find Tariq, but only when they arrived they found the apartment he had been staying in, just no sign of Tariq, he was long gone, and no forwarding address. The decision for Riley to leave was her own, even though they both knew she didn't want to deep down. Liam tried to beg her to stay. They would keep looking, and even if he was never found they could find a way to make it work. Riley knew the toll the press and surrounding countries would take on Liam, she read tabloids, the press would constantly question everything, Riley would be cheating on Liam at every turn according to them and then the country would look unstable, ultimately with a tear-filled goodbye, she left, changing her number and address.
Liam knew he could never marry Madeline, he loved Riley and that was more than enough to end the engagement for him. He knew that Riley loved him and more than anything he wanted to believe that fate would bring them back together just as it had before. A few drops of water splashed across his face as he kept his pace.
Liam walked a few more blocks, the rain began to fall heavier, he quickly ducked into a pasty shop in hopes the rain would soon subside.
"Can I help you with anything?" The woman behind the counter questioned.
Liam approached the counter as his eyes swept the glass "Cronuts," a nostalgic smile spread across his face. "Please."
Liam thought back to the night Riley took them all on a late-night cronut run. She raved about this delectable confection that hailed from the USA and was both a croissant and a donut combined. He thought it too good to be true, that maybe Riley was wrong about something but that first bite only proved that the woman just like the pastry was more than what meets the eye.
"You look about a million miles away." The sales clerk's voice pulled him from his thoughts. "Must be a hell of a thought. " She smiled.
"It was." Liam smiled again, "Boy meets girl, girl travels halfway around the world to try and win the hand of said boy. Boy and girl fall madly in love and then disaster tears them apart. Or that's the way the story goes."
"That sounds like quite the fairy tale. Here, hun, it's on the house." The woman offered him a smile as she slid the bag across the glass. Liam thanked her and dropped a large bill into the tip jar.
Liam grabbed the bag about to make his way to a table to wait out the rain when the door jingled as it opened. "the usual Rose," the woman's voice came from behind and he stopped dead in his tracks. That voice, the same one that plagued his thoughts, his dreams. The one who whispered his name so tenderly, the voice that could bring him to his knees in an instant. There was no way it was her, in a city so big what were the odds?
Slowly he turned, his palms sweaty, every nerve ending buzzing with pent-up hope and want."Riley." He whispered. She stood there completely still, unshed tears threatening to spill over. He shook himself out of his daze, willing his feet to move as he crossed the space between them.
"Li- Liam? Is it really you? Are you really here?" She reached out for him only to hesitate unsure if she should. Liam took notice of her hesitation, reaching out for her hand. "It's me Riley, I'm here fate has brought us back together and this time I'm never letting you go."
Hi! Some of you may have noticed I've been absent for the past few weeks. Others may not have noticed (or cared..lol). For those that did, I wanted to give you an update. My kiddos have been super sick, which means I've been on mama nurse duty, full-time.
However, I have also been working on a new story with the amazing @leelee10898! We are super excited to share it with you but want to get a little more written before we start posting.
There will be a new page for the story so that we can both post, so be on the lookout for that and some teasers to come soon!
A/N: this was written for @choicesflashfics using the prompt "I'll be dam to if I don't make you smile at least once today." Since I didnt get to post last week. I double downed and used the prompt, "sometimes memories are the worst form of torture."
"No need Brooks. I just told zoo security that Maxwell was a little 'special'. And to go easy on him. He just isn't allowed back at that zoo."
It was a beautiful spring day in April. The sun was shining, the flowers were in bloom. Liam, Riley, Drake, and Maxwell had traveled to the United States for a week-long adventure in US History, the state being Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Pennsylvania to be exact. Liam had his eye on the rich history of the city, especially the liberty bell. Riley being from the States thought it a great first stop on their tour as there was something for everyone to do.
The morning had just begun With the group having breakfast Riley and Liam went over their itinerary for the day while Drake and Maxwell had other ideas of fun for the day.
"I'm going to the zoo," Maxwell announced, stuffing his face with waffles.
"Oh, that should be fun. It's been forever since I went to the Philadelphia Zoo." Riley smiled. "Drake, are you going too?"
"No." He gruffed, sipping his coffee.
"Drake never does anything fun with me." Maxwell sighed, continuing to shove food in his mouth.
"Not a fan of animals are we?" Riley shot back, a mischievous gleam in her eye. Liam kept quiet smirking as he read the paper in front of him. He knew how this would play out, Riley would poke Drake until he was flustered enough, and then she could get him to do whatever she wanted him to.
"I didn't say that. That's not what I meant."
"Oh, I remember how much those Pandas in China bothered you."
"They didn't bo-"
"They just wanted to cuddle, and you just pushed it over."
"That's not what happened. I,"
"Let's not forget about the red pandas in the menagerie. You couldn't be bothered by them either."
"I do not have a prob-"
"I think Drake hates Animals. Why do you hate Animals Drake?"
"I don't hate. Thats not. I didn't say."
"Maybe he just hates fun." Maxwell chimed in.
"I like fun!" Drake protested. "And animals."
"Then is Maxwell? Do you hate Maxwell? Is that why you won't go to the zoo?"
"Hate is a strong word."
"Or maybe you're scared." She smirked, she could tell Drake was getting to his boiling point. Just a little more pressure and he'd melt like the big, gooey marshmallow he was.
"I got it. You're scared. That's it, Drakes afraid of animals, and fun. Oh and Maxwell. He's a big, giant-sized sissy."
"I'm not scared of Animals, or Maxwell, or fun! I like fun, and just to prove it I'll go to the stupid zoo with you Maxwell! Let's go." Drake stood, red-faced and breathing heavily.
"Really? Alright! I gotta go get changed. Oh, I'm so excited!" Maxwell shrieked, jumping up quickly knocking over his chair and running off.
"Ok. Ok. You sure told me." Riley held her hands up in defeat. As Drake shook his head and disappeared. Leaving just Riley and Liam alone.
"He played right into your hands didn't he love?" Liam chuckled.
"Doesn't he always?" She flashed a brilliant smile. "Besides, at least now Maxwell has a little supervision."
A little while later Maxwell and Drake arrived at the zoo. Maxwell could hardly contain his excitement as he marveled at all the exhibits.
"Drake, look! A tiger is walking right over our heads! Look!" Maxwell pointed out that the zoo had several overhead passages where different animals could walk between habitats.
"That's nice." Drake answer in a monotone voice.
They continued to walk through the zoo, Maxwell oohing and ahhing at all the different animals he came across. Drake on the other hand seemed extremely bored, like he didn't want to be there and truly he didn't. His idea of a fun day would be anything other than babysitting Maxwell Beaumont at the zoo.
"Otters!" Maxwell shouted, running off.
"Maxwell get back here," Drake called after but he was already gone. He weaved between parents and their kids. Offering a few "excuse me's the way until he found Maxwell with his face pressed against the huge otter tank.
"Fere fo fote." He spoke with a muffled voice, his mouth pressed against the glass otter pool.
"What? What does that even mean?" Drake asked, confused. "And get your damned face off that glass, do you know the number of germs that is infested with?"
"They're so cute! Arent they?"
"Yeah, yeah adorable. Are we almost done here?" Drake gruffed.
"Not at all Drakey, we are just getting started." Maxwell beamed. "You are always so grumpy, you need to lighten up." Maxwell reached out trying to move Drake's shoulders.
"Yeah, that's not gonna happen." Drake shrugged him off.
"That's it, you are wayyyy too grumpy. "I'll be damned if I don't make you smile at least once today." Max snapped his fingers, "That's now my mission today."
Drake rolled his eyes "Good luck trying."
At every turn, Maxwell tried to get Drake to smile. The giraffe exhibit didn't work. The lions, nope. Black bears that exhibited similar Drake-like behavior, not a smile cracked at all. Penguins? Not even close. Maxwell had begun to give up hope when they stumbled upon the wings of Asia attraction. Maxwell's eyes lit up, this had to be it. He had plenty of experience in this specific area. Drake noticed Maxwell's excitement and shook his head.
"You can try all you want but, you're not getting me to smile. Just give it up already Beaumont."
"Never say never, Drake!" Maxwell smirked and before he knew it, it was his turn. Maxwell stepped into the area and was given a small cup of food. "Im going to need more." He stated and the employee shook her head. "I'm sorry this is all that's allowed." Maxwell nodded yes and walked out into the area the birds were. Children were throwing the feed all over the place, there was no organization or direction. Just place feed in hand and let the birds eat.
Maxwell scanned the area, locating a bucket of fresh feed. He inched closer grabbing ahold of the bucket while an employee was distracted. He stood in the center of the circle enclosure and cleared his voice.
"Good people of Philadelphia, I am Maxwell Beaumont, aka bird whisperer." Everyone surrounding the enclosure stopped and stared. "I told my good friend Drake I would make him smile today. He's right over there." Maxwell pointed at Drake. "Say Hi Drake."
"Ah hell," Drake grumbled.
This is my last-ditch effort. Enjoy the show." Maxwell spoke with a sense of enthusiasm. Just as he lifted the lid off the feed container and thrust the plastic container up with force. The birdseed leaped out and into the air before falling to the ground. Everything happened so fast. The birds abandoned the other guest flocking around Maxwell, feathers, and squawks rang out. Children and parents fled the encampment with screams of terror.
"Somebody drop a beat, ouch. Ow. Hey, stop that. That's a bad peacock. Hey. That's my leg."
Since it was a warm spring day maxwells skin was balmy making seeds stick to him and his clothes. The birds began to peck at his pants, nipping at his ankles and legs.
Maxwell reached for his ankles but another peacock ran over, Flapping its wings and jumping at him, knocking him over onto the ground. "No. No, no, no. Hey! Stop it. That hurts. That's my nose. Oh my god Drake, Help me, it's got my nipple!"
Finally, the employees were able to get the birds away from Maxwell while he lay there in the fetal position. "Are they gone?" He peaked between his fingers, confirming it was clear. He stood, feathers and dirt stuck to him, he had a few scrapes on his arms and face but otherwise, he emerged intact. He walked out to join Drake who was now sitting on a bench, doubled over in a fit of laughter.
"I thought I was a goner. Drake? Drake are you.. are you laughing?"
"Funny. Shit." Drake wheezed, trying to regain his composure but Maxwell blew out a breath, a feather popping out of his mouth did him in again and he fell to the ground, laughing hysterically.
"Excuse me sir but, we are going to have to ask you to come with us." Zoo security spoke as they approached the two.
"Me? But I didn't do anything. I was just feeding the birds. Tell him, Drake." He tried to clear his name but Drake was absolutely no good to him laughing as he was. Drake finally stood to his feet. "Come on little buddy, we better do as they say." He clasped him on his shoulder and then walked away with security.
A couple hours later Liam and Riley finally arrived back at their hotel. The group sat around the dining table eating some dinner, Liam telling them about everything he learned and saw that day.
"So, how was the zoo? Did you guys have a good time?" Riley asked as she popped a fry into her mouth.
"Oh you know, seen some animals, Maxwell got us kicked out of the zoo." Drake shrugged his shoulders, wearing a huge grin.
"It was all a big misunderstanding!" Maxwell shouted, shaking his head. "Those birds are not normal. I think they're on steroids or are super-sayans or something. "
"Yeah, sure. They put steroids in their birdseed." Drake laughed.
"Really?" Maxwell's eyes got wide.
"Drake, are you laughing at this? Liam, should we do damage control?" Riley began to panic.
"Ok, I get it. It's funny. Haha." Maxwell rolled his eyes. "I think we're missing the big picture here."
Riley and Liam shook their heads as Drake regaled them on the story of Maxwell and the birds of Asia..
"What's that Max?" Liam questioned.
"I got Mr grumpy to smile." Maxwell beamed. "At least we will always have these memories."
Drake trained and rolled his eyes. "sometimes memories are the worst form of torture."
This is my first submission for @choicesflashfics using the prompt "I saw this and it reminded me of you." Since yesterday was Easter, this idea immediately popped into my head. I hope you enjoy. I've also added a little 'visual aid' to give you the full picture 🤣

It was Easter Sunday. Riley wanted to share some of her American customs with her friends and family so Liam rented a huge cabin in upstate New York. Riley and Hannah got busy in the kitchen while Liam, Drake, and Maxwell ventured out into the nearby town for some necessities. Drake pulled the SUV into a parking spot and the three got out of the vehicle. "Ahhh. Smell that?" Drake inhaled, stretching his arms out. "That's the smell of fresh air right there."
Liam grinned and shook his head. "This town suits you, Drake."
Maxwell continued to sniff in the air. "I don't know Drake, all I smell is," he sniffed again. "Cinnamon. Oh man, that smells good." Maxwell took off towards the bakery.
"Maxwell, wait-" Liam yelled.
"Let him go Li. Let's go get the other stuff we need. We can collect Maxwell after we are done."
Liam looked hesitantly toward the direction Max took off in. "I don't know Drake.." A barrage of bad scenarios played out in his mind.
"Hell be fine. Let's go."
Liam shook the thoughts from his mind and joined Drake. After Liam and Drake went to the Liquor store and grocery, they headed further into town to look for Maxwell.
"Well, I don't see any firey crashes, or loose wildlife roaming the streets. No ones running in fear, so it looks like a win." Drake teased.
"We haven't found Maxwell yet, don't rush to conclusions " Liam sighed, Drake chuckled, clasping him on the back. Just as Maxwell emerged from the bakery, carrying a giant-sized sized pastry box.
"Liam! Drake! I was just coming to find you guys. I got dessert for dinner!" Maxwell beamed.
"Oh, that sounds wonderful Max. What did you get us?" Liam smiled trying to lift the box and sneak a peak. Maxwell quickly pulled the box out of Liam's reach. "Oh no Liam, it's a surprise. I can't show you. You'll see at dinner, let's go." Maxwell turned on his heel and took off for the car. Liam stood rooted in place Drake coming up and standing next to him.
"You want to know what's in that box don't you?" Drake snickered.
"I shouldn't. I really should but,"
"You do." Drake finished for him.
"Yup."
After a short drive, the guys made it back to the cabin. They helped Riley and Hannah put everything away and spent most of the day relaxing before it was time to eat. After a large dinner, the group sat around the table before Hannah pulled a pie from the kitchen and placed it on the table. "I made a chocolate silk pie. I hope you love it." She smiled.
"It looks delicious, Hannah. I can't wait to dig in." Riley licked her lips just asMaxwelll came barging into the dining room carrying the big box. He dropped it right down on the table making the table shake and some glasses fell over.
"Finally. "Liam breathed out. It was finally time to find out what Maxwell had in the box. The contents plagued Liam the entire day while Drake teased him with his thoughts. Exploding pasty, undercooked cookies, blood pudding, or dirt pudding equipt with real live worms were just a few ideas Drake tossed out. Liam shuddered at the thought.
"What do we have here, Maxwell?" Riley quirked her brow.
"Well there we were in town when Drake was rambling on about fresh air but all I could smell was cinnamon. So I ran into the bakery and found this." He gently tapped on the box. "I saw this and it reminded me of you." He smiled brightly at Drake.
"Aww hell," Drake grunted as Liam peered closer in anticipation. Maxwell finally lifted the top of the box revealing a cake shaped like a lamb. It had blue jellybeans for eyes that started to melt and turn to jelly, one eye slid making it droop. Its nose, also a red jelly bean also melted, causing a bit of redness that resembled a light coloring of blood just above the makeshift mouth, complete with a grouping of crooked, jagged, rotten teeth. Hanna gasped and covered her eyes with her hands.
"I talked the girls at the bakery into letting me redecorate his face. Doesn't it look just like Drake?"
"The similarities are uncanny, Max." Riley assured him trying to keep a straight face.
Liam broke out into a fit of giggles as Drake sat there with a deep frown on his face.
"It looks like it might eat me." Hannah peered between her fingers, which made Liam laugh even harder.
"Drake, aren't you going to say anything to Maxwell?" Riley pressed.
"Nope," Drake grunted again.
"Drake." She warned and Drake rolled his eyes.
"Fine." He sighed, turning towards Maxwell. "Ah. Thank you for this um thing."
Maxwell's smile grew even bigger. "Any time buddy." He clasped Drake on the shoulder. "I thought to myself, Drake loves animals and this one, well I had to make him look like he belonged to you."
"Well, it's fitting. I'm in hell, why not have a demented Lamb to tie it all together." He shook his head. He had been to an American Easter before but this one was literally the weirdest Easter ever.

Liam paced the floor of his quarters, a group of guards stood around the dining table looking over maps of the area Drake and Jenn were in. The confirmation that something was wrong setting in after they failed to arrive in Lythikos. It had been nearly three hours since Jenna's last text, Liam's stomach knotted more with each passing minute.
"I need an update," Liam spoke up, turning his attention towards the activity to the side of him.
"We have guards combing the areas around where they were said to be. Duchess Olivia has a team out as well, we will find them, sir."
Liam pinched the bridge of his nose, he should have been with her, he should have gone to Ramsford and talked to her. Now the two people who mean the most to him in this world are unaccounted for and Liam being the most powerful man in the country, felt completely powerless. The nagging feeling that Hana had something to do with them being followed gnawed at him like a dog would a bone. He crossed the room, staring out his window playing everything over again in his mind…
A few hours ago…..
Liam marched down the long corridor of the bottom floor of the palace that housed the royal guard's security room and housing. It also housed the dungeon or as they called it these days, the palace jail. Hana was still on his tail, he wanted nothing more than to tell her to get lost, but his focus was on finding the head of the royal guard and getting someone to Drake and Jenna immediately.
He reached the security room and tossed the door open. Three guards stood immediately upon seeing him, it wasn't a normal occurrence for the King to be on this level of the palace and the look on his face told them something was wrong.
" Your majesty," one of the guards spoke as they bowed before him. "We weren't expecting you."
"Where's Bastien? Get me Bastien Now!" He shouted, making Hana jump next to him.
One of the guards known as James immediately radioed over calling Bastien down to the security room.
A few minutes later Bastien entered the door Laim who had been pacing stopped, turning to Bastien. "Drake and Jenna are in danger. They were being followed by an SUV in the Flintlock area, I can not get in contact with either now "
"On it sir." Bastien nodded, springing into action. He called a group of guards down, briefing them on the situation, grouping them into teams, and assigning them each area to search.
"Is there anything I can do?" Hana spoke up, Liam forgetting she had followed him into the guard's wing. He spun on his heels as soon as he heard her voice, "Did you have something to do with this?" He seethed crossing the room in a flash.
"What? No, Liam I-"
"Did you have them followed? I swear on everything holy, Hana I will have your head on a pike." Liam backed her into a corner, hanas face paled, the fear visible in her eyes as the fire raged within his.
"N, no Liam, I didn't do anything. I have been here at the palace with you. I swear."
"Sir. Sir," Liam felt Bastien's hand on his shoulder, " You need to remain calm, we will find Drake and Jenna."
Liam inched back, and Hana stood against the wall, frozen. "Get her out of here," Liam ordered, as one of the guards escorted her out of the room. "She doesn't leave the palace, keep an eye on her Bastien, I don't trust her," Liam ordered.
"Understood, " Bastien nodded, before exiting the room.
Liam picked up his phone, dialing her number again, but still it kept going to voicemail. He had to find her, he had to find Drake, He was going to find them both and they were going to be ok, they had to be.
The phone ringing in his hand pulled him from his thoughts. "Hello." He lifted the phone to his ear.
"Sir, we have an update."
Drake awoke with a groan, his body throbbing in pain, where the hell was he? He blinked his eyes trying to shake the fog from his brain and it started to come back to him in pieces. He was driving, there was an SUV behind him, and then another came out of nowhere in front of them. He swerved to avoid it and ended up going down an embankment and that was all he remembered. The smell of smoke, coolant and blood filled his senses, he hit a tree. "Jenna." He spoke aloud, remembering he wasn't alone. Drake lifted his left arm easily enough, nothing broke there, his right arm was not as fortunate. A sharp pain hit him like a million knives jabbing into his flesh and he hissed out in pain. He looked over into the passenger seat, Jenna's crumpled body lay slumped to the side. "Mahoney," he mumbled. "Mahoney talk to me, Mahoney, Jenna, are you ok? Please tell me you're ok. Please talk to me." He pleaded but she didn't utter a word.
********
Drake managed to un-do his seatbelt and wiggle his way to her. Careful not to move her much he reached out with his good arm and felt for a pulse, it was weak but she had one. "Mahoney, please, please hang on," Drake groaned, the pain he was in began to overtake him. "Liam's gonna find us, he, he has to." He whispered before losing consciousness again.
A little while later Drake stirred awake at the sound of rustling nearby. "I think I found something," he heard the voice say close by. He tried to shout but the only thing that came out was a strained, quiet help. He reached over putting his hand on the steering wheel, trying to give it a push but no sound came out, must have been damaged on impact. The rustling sounds grew closer, "I found the truck. Requesting backup,"
"We're in here." He managed to get out in a strained, hoarse voice. Jenna was still unconscious next to him. A few minutes later a group of guards and EMTs surrounded the truck, making strides in freeing the two.
They pulled Drake out first as he was slightly mobile and placed him on the stretcher. An emt attempted to assess him and he shook his head, "No. I'm fine," he lied. "Take care of Jenna, she's in bad shape."
"You are most certainly not fine, Mr Walker. Miss Mahoney is in good hands and will be handled by the best hands Cordonia has to offer." The EMT was stern but held back a smirk, as Drake huffed and rolled his eyes.
"Your reputation precedes you, Drake. The rumor is that the king's best friend is a stubborn, cranky ass, but loyal." The EMT known as Lucy smirked, trying to distract Drake from what was going on in the truck, they had finally extracted Jenna and rushed her to the awaiting ambulance.
"Yeah well, I will be less of a cranky ass when I know Mahoney is ok. I should go with her." He tried to climb down from the gurney.
"Whoa, there Walker. You are in no shape to walk. Duchess Olivia would have my head on a pike if anything more happened to you." Lucy snapped.
"You're from Lythikos, I take it." Drake groaned as his sudden movements sent waves of pain throughout his body.
The smirk Lucy wore told him she indeed was from Lythikos, he threw his good arm up in surrender. Drake was thick headed but he wasn't an idiot. People from Lythikos were scary.
After a short ride to the hospital and a few hours at the hospital, and much arguing on his part, Drake was treated for his injuries and released. He had a broken arm, a hairline ankle fracture, two broken fingers, a black eye, and lacerations to the face, arms, and hands. A guard rolled his wheelchair into the private waiting area of the hospital and closed the door behind him. Liam paced the floors, in anticipation.
"You're gonna wear a hole in the floor." Drake chuckled
"I don't know if I can sit still, all this wondering." Liam sighed, flopping into the chair next to where Drake's wheelchair was parked. " But I'll try." He gave a half smile before letting out a frustrated breath. "How has it been three hours and no updates?"
"She's gonna be ok, Li. Mahoney is a fighter. She's gotta be." Drake tried to reassure Liam, but even he wasn't sure what the outcome would be.
"I hope so. I don't," He paused. " I don't know what I will do if I lose her, Drake. I don't know what I would do if I lost either of you." Liam reached out, patting Drake's good hand.
"I'm alright, Li. A little banged up but, I'm ok. And Jenna, she's gonna be ok too."
"I'm serious Drake, you are my best friend, you're my brother. I'm really glad you're ok. Did you speak to Bastien yet? Do you have any description of the driver of the other SUV?"
"I spoke to Bas and told him everything that happened. It happened so fast that all I know is it was a silver SUV and the driver was wearing a mask. No plate information, nothing distinctive."
Liam stood pacing again. "I think Hana had something to do with this."
"You sure Li? Did you find anything on her?" Drake perked up. He had a short list of suspects in the setup case, and ever since the garden party when he placed that envelope in that waiters hand, Hana was at the top of the list.
"No, nothing. I can't explain it but, It's a nagging feeling. She was a great friend when Jenna left. I leaned on her for comfort and guidance, I thought she thought of that pact to protect me but, I don't know. Seeing that footage from Jenna's apple pin has me questioning everything."
"We will get to the bottom of this Li. I promise you." Drake balled his fist, slamming the one he could down on the wheelchair.
"Heads will roll!" A voice came from outside the door and both men snapped their heads towards that direction just as Olivia barged inside.
"What?" She shrugged her shoulders as the two men stared at her. "Not everything can be butterflies and rainbows. Things get hard sometimes. that's just how it is."
Liam gave her a pointed look, with a hint of amusement.
"I just needed to give the fine staff of Cordonia General Hospital and your royal guard a little reminder that nobody messes with Lythikos or their friends," Olivia smirked, dropping in the seat next to Drake. "Glad to see you made it out ok, Walker."
"Well, I'd hate for you to have to break in a new bickering partner." He smiled, taking her hand.
Liam arched his brow and Olivia rolled her eyes. "Don't read into it too much Liam."
Before Liam could say a word a knock came at the door and Doctor Farley walked in. "I'm here with an update on Miss Mahoney."

"Is it true, Liam?" She asked again.
"Jenna," Liam started to speak, reaching out for her." Let's jus-"
"No!" She cut him off, pulling away from him. "Do not touch me. I need to know if it's true."
Liam hung his head in defeat, trying to find the right thing to say. "Can you? Will you just. Jenna, can we please talk about this inside?" He lifted his head giving her a pleading look, not wanting to have this conversation outside in the hall for every single person within earshot.
She moved past him, pushing her way into his quarters. Her eyes wandered the room, his smell engulfed her senses. Nothing had changed since the last time she had been there, she pushed the thoughts from her mind and focused her attention on Liam who was standing cautiously by the now-closed door.
"Well?" She spoke, arms folded across her chest.
"I know you're upset but, you have to understand why I made that stupid pact in the first place." Liam started and she scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"Upset? I'm more than upset Liam. How could you not tell me? Jesus Christ we had sex, you declared your love for me, telling me you would wait for me. All the while you conveniently left out one HUGE detail."
"I'm sorry. I should have told you, you shouldn't have found out from Hana." Liam reached out for her hand and Jenna snatched it away.
"You think? What did you think was going to happen? Did you just think you would go through with things exactly like the last time? I can't do that again Liam. I refuse to be the woman you love in the dark while you fake it with someone else in the light."
"That's not it, Jenna. I would never put you through that again. I love you, I want you and only you. I have no plans on going through with marrying Hana. Love, you have to believe me."
"I am having a hard time believing anything coming from your mouth right now. To stand there and act stupid, like you had no idea what I was asking." She seethed, pacing the floor. So many things went through her mind but one thing stuck out in particular, she stopped and turned her attention back towards him. "How did you know Hana was the one who told me?"
"Um. Well. About that." He chuckled nervously.
"What did you do Liam?"
"Listen, love, you have to know that everything I do is to protect you."
"Liam."
"Ah," Liam nervously rubbed the back of his neck. He had managed to work himself into a gigantic mess. "The apple pendant is a camera." He finally admitted.
Jenna's jaw dropped in shock. That's how the guards knew she was coming, they were ready for her and it was because Liam told them because he was watching her. "You. You're spying on me?"
"No. No! it's not like that. Jenna please, can we just sit down and discuss all of this? I know it looks bad. Really, really bad." Liam approached her cautiously, placing his hands on her shoulders. "If you could just hear me out."
"I. This is too much. This was a mistake. I shouldn't have come here." Jenna shrugged his hands off her shoulders and pushed past him and out the door.
Liam hung his head in defeat, he wanted to chase her down and explain everything to her but he didn't want to push her too far. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone dialing a number.
"I need your help."

Jenna pulled up out front of Ramsford and killed the engine. She spent the whole ride in utter silence, with no radio, nothing to drown out a million things racing through her mind. It took every ounce of willpower to not break down during the drive, she could feel everything bubbling to the surface, placing her hands back on top of the steering wheel she let out a shaky breath before the tears started to flow freely. She didn't come to Cordonia to win Liam back, she came for herself, but the thought was always in the back of her mind. He confessed his love, he told her he wanted to be with her, that he would wait. She should have known it was all a lie.
The outside light flicked on and she pulled herself together, wiping her tears and checking her face in the mirror for running mascara. She exited the car and walked inside, closing the door behind her. It was quiet, a little too quiet for her liking. The quiet led to thoughts and urges she didn't want to have. She made her way down the hall and into Bertrand's study approaching the bar cart. She stood in front of it, looking at the options, the bottle of whiskey seemed to be calling out to her. She reached her hand forward and then froze, "No." She said, "You're stronger than this, you're stronger than all of this." Fresh tears now stung her eyes, threatening to spill over.
"You ok Mahoney?" The gruff voice took her by surprise.
"What are you doing here Drake?" She sniffled, spinning around. "Liam called you, didn't he?"
When he didn't answer she shook her head and let out a sigh. "Of course he did. I'm going to bed." She turned and started up the stairs, Drake followed her.
"Don't be like that Mahoney, come on." He called out but she ignored him, continuing her way up the stairs. "Mahoney. Mahoney. Jenna, stop!" He shouted.
Jenna stopped at her door, twisted the knob, and walked inside. She left the door open and Drake followed her inside, closing it behind him.
"He lied to me, Drake. How could I have been so stupid? Why am I even here? Why do I care about clearing my name?" The tears flowed freely now.
"Mahoney." Drake sighed pulling her into his chest. "Look I know you're angry, hurt, confused, and more but, you're here because you love Liam and he loves you. And before you argue with me about him lying, and whatever else you'd like to just know that everything he has done is to protect you."
"Then why didn't he tell me about his pact to marry Hana?"
"Hell Mahoney I don't know. Probably because he was drunk when he did it, he also told Hana that he couldn't go through with it afterward."
"Wait, he did?"
"Yup. But knowing you, you blew up. Shut down and leave before he could explain things, didn't you?"
"Maybe.." Jenna stretched the word sitting on the side of the bed. "I'm still mad at him for lying and I'm not ready to talk to him."
"Yeah. I figured as much." Drake stood from the bed. "Just sleep on it. I'll be down the hall if you need me " Drake walked to the door, turning back to look at her. "Oh and Mahoney,"
"Yeah?"
"He was a mess when you left tonight, he's got a lot on his plate, cut him a little slack."
"I'll take that under advisement." Jenna gave him a weak smile, he nodded and closed the door behind him.
Jenna collapsed onto the bed, the events of the past few weeks heavy on her mind. She closed her eyes, the exhaustion of the day's events taking over, the next thing she knew she awoke to the sound of a loud pounding on the door. Still fully clothed she jumped up and grabbed the door.
"Jesus, it's like trying to wake the dead in here " Drake grumbled.
"Sorry. I crashed pretty hard last night." Jenna rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
"I would say, it's 1:00."
"PM?!" She shouted. "Drake, why'd you let me sleep so long?" Jenna panicked, grabbing her phone. She had 37 text messages and 28 missed calls. Most from Olivia, a few from Liam begging her to call him.
"Yeah, Liv has been blowing up my phone. She's back in Lythikos, sounds like she found something."
"Then what are we still doing here?" Jenna threw her hands up in the air, before grabbing her suitcase and tossing the little bit of belongings she brought with her inside.
"Don't you want to eat or shower?" Drake arched his brow as the luggage hit the floor.
"Nope. I will worry about all that later." She stated, earning a Judgmental look from Drake. "Fine, I'll grab something from the kitchen before we go, I'll shower later."
"You're forgetting something." Drake walked over to the dresser, picking up the apple pendant Liam gave her. Jenna rolled her eyes. "Be mad all you want but, this is important Mahoney, if it wasn't for this we would have never seen Hana hand the waiter from Regina's party something."
Jenna's eyes widened, since she just learned it was a camera she hadn't even thought that it might have picked things she wasn't paying attention to. "I didn't know." She whispered. Drake held it out and she plucked it from his hand, tossing it into her bag. "Fine. Let's just go. Lythikos is three hours away, you're driving." She smirked, pushing past him.
Meanwhile at the Palace….
Liam had spent the majority of the day in and out of meetings. He had finished his last grueling meeting of the day with Neville who was petitioning the crown to invest more money into his family's golf course so the country could generate more revenue. It was a good idea, the pitch was even perfect except for the person delivering it. Liam poured himself a large glass of scotch and tossed himself into his chair. He picked up his phone, it was now 4 pm, and not a word from Jenna. Drake had texted him around 2 that he and Jenna were heading to Lythkios, but nothing after that.
"Knock. Knock." A voice came from the door, Liam looked up to see Hana standing there.
He tucked his phone into his pocket forcing a smile. Liam had grown close to Hana in the few months since he ended his engagement to Madeline and Jenna left. Now he questioned if he ever really knew her. "Hana, what a nice surprise. I wasn't expecting you today, what brings you by?" He feigned interest in her visit.
"Don't tell me you forgot?" Hana walked further inside and sat down on the couch. "We had dinner plans."
Liam looked down at his calendar realizing they had made plans weeks ago. "I'm so sorry Hana, it has been a busy couple of weeks, it completely slipped my mind."
"It has been a busy couple of weeks, what with Jenna coming back and all," Hana leaned forward closer to Liam's desk. "I have to ask because we haven't spoken about it but, how are you doing with her back?"
Liam reclined back in his chair in silence, contemplating his words. Hana had been a friend before but how much of that was real? "It stirs some feelings up." He finally spoke.
Hana let out a sigh. "You still love her don't you?" The look on Liam's face told her all she needed to know. "Liam, remember what happened before. You're king, you have to think of your country, not some girl."
"Spoken like someone who's never been in love before." He shook his head.
"I've been in love. It's painful, pointless, and overrated." Hana answered coldly.
"Well, I feel sorry for you then Hana. Because yes, love can be painful but it also brings joy, I like to think it gives life meaning."
"Liam, I am going to be blunt with you. I think you're wasting your time and energy on her. I know you loved her once, I know she broke your heart and made you a laughingstock of the court. Don't make the same mistakes again." Hana stood, walking to Liam's side. "You have the potential to become the best king this country has ever seen, you just need someone strong by your side." Hana trailed her fingertips along his arm.
"Hana," Liam warned.
"We made a pact Liam, I can help you be great." She smirked.

Drake and Jenna were about an hour and a half into their drive to Lythikos. Stopping a few times for coffee and bathroom breaks. It was now inching closer to 5 pm, the sun had started to set making the twist and turns of the countryside a little darker. Drake kept glancing up in his mirror but kept a steady pace. Jenna stared out the window watching the trees and houses pass by, her mind on the events of the day before playing over and over again.
"Everything ok?" She asked, noticing Drake's constant checking of his mirror and the worry etched on his face.
"I think we're being followed." He finally spoke.
"What!? How do you know?"
"This SUV has been behind us for the past half hour, pretty sure it followed us out of that last stop."
"Ok maybe they're also going to Lythkios, maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe it's one of the Royal Guard cars, maybe Liam sent one for protection you know since he is so hell-bent on it. " Jenna began to panic.
"That doesn't look like one of their SUVs Mahoney." Drake stated, "Why don't you Text Liam and ask."
"Can you? I'm not ready to reach out." Jenna whined.
"Mahoney, I'm driving here. We may be being followed, get your head out of your ass and text Liam!" Drake barked, Jenna flinched. Drake usually kept his cool under most circumstances, the fact he did just now told her he was genuinely worried. She put on her big girl panties and fired off a text asking Liam if he sent someone to tail them. The response came back almost immediately.
"He didn't send anyone," Jenna answered quickly and a feeling of numbness came over her, fear, she was now afraid
Drake was familiar with the area, he knew there was a turn-off just up ahead, "hold on tight." He ordered and quickly took the turn, picking up speed. A minute later the same SUV quickly rounded the turn and they knew they were being followed.
At the palace…
Liam picked up his phone, his heart raced when Jenna's name popped up on the screen. He stood quickly, hiding his phone from Hanas view as he moved away from her.
Drake wants to know if you sent someone to follow us. The text read a slew of emotions filled him.
No. Is everything ok? What's going on? Where are you now?
He anxiously waited for a response.
We are being followed. Drake says we are on a back road in Flintlock, close to the safe house.
"Everything ok?" Hana pulled him from his thoughts. He looked up and then back down at the phone. "I. I'm not sure. Hana, I'm sorry but something has come up, I have to go." Liam gripped his phone tighter and headed down the hallway
"Maybe I can help?" Hana shouted after, her short legs struggling to keep up. But Liam kept walking. He dialed her number but it went straight to voicemail, he tried Drakes and the same thing.
******
Back in the truck Drake and Jenna were flying around curves and bends in the roads the suv tailing then was now maintaining speed.
"How are we going to lose them, Drake?"
"I'm trying Mahoney, they just won't let up," Drake growled.
Jenna peered out the back window watching the silver SUV gain on them. Saying a silent prayer they make it out of this. The reception on the roads was spotty, her texts or calls weren't going through.
"Hey. I think they're backing off." Jenna watched as the silver SUV slowed down, giving them space. She turned her head back towards the road "Drake look out!" She shouted as an SUV was headed straight for them. Drake swerved avoiding the other car but lost control, his truck skidding out sending them straight into a wooded area, Jenna screamed just as the truck collided with a large tree and everything went silent.

A few days had passed since the brunch at the Palace. Liam sat reclined in his chair, staring at the phone in front of him. He wanted to call her, just to hear her voice would maybe set him at ease. Someone was going to lengths to set her up, but was it the same person who sent Tariq into her room that night? Or could it be someone else, a stuck-up court member who was determined to see her gone?
Hana had been a close confidant to him since Jenna left. She had become a good friend and an ally, someone who had his back against the council members who insisted he take a bride, the country would have a queen and the land could have an heir. He had to come to know Hana well or so he thought. Something in the conversation he watched between Jenna and her seemed off to him.
His mind kept going back to it. He had watched that video time and time again, Drake's eyes had glazed over when Liam leaned up "Did you see that?"
"See what?" Drake snorted, "We've been at this for hours Li. I've spent the whole day with Olivia, do you know how exhausting that is?"
"This. Right here." He pointed. The frame was of Jenna facing Drake and Olivia, her view was toward the back of the estate by the outdoor bar. She was speaking to the two of them, so she would not be paying much attention to her surroundings.
Drake sat up, squinting his tired eyes. "Looks like Hana handing something to the waiter, in passing." He answered.
Liam examined the frame carefully. It wasn't very clear but she definitely placed something in that man's hand, and he intended to find out just what.
He let out a frustrated sigh, shaking the thought from his head. He reached out and grabbed his phone, swiping the phone on and pulling up a name. His finger hovered over the dial button before tossing it back onto his desk. Fuck it he muttered standing up grabbing both his keys and phone and exiting his office.
Liam expertly maneuvered the sleek BMW around the bends and curves of the Cordonian Countryside. The drive to Lythkios would have taken hours, lucky for him where he was headed would take minutes. He pulled into the estate grounds and walked up to the door, knocking firmly. He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked around, it had been a while since he was there.
"Liam? Hey buddy. What brings you here?" The door opened and Maxwell beamed on the other side.
"Hello Maxwell, it is good to see you." Liam greeted him, stepping inside. "I was wondering if I could see Jenna, Olivia has told me she is here."
"Okie dokie, I will get her." Maxwell turned spinning on his heels. "Little blossom," he shouted at the top of his lungs. "Little blossom!" He shouted again. Liam cupped his ears laughing as Maxwell bound the steps.
Olivia had some business to attend to out of town, she was very quiet and private about her personal affairs but, as Liam understood it was something to do with Jenna's scandal, and for that Liam was grateful. Bertrand was not a fan of Jenna, he was embarrassed by her actions and her not becoming queen hurt any help his estate could benefit from. Liam, being the caring soul that he was, stepped in and helped anyway. Fydelia and the Palace we're known for their beautiful gardens and landscaping, Ramsford was home to a beautiful vineyard. The Beaumont family had created a delicious wine they called the Royal Apple, Liam helped land a contract to supply several upscale restaurants in the country with their wine.
"What is so damn important that you had to drag me out of my bed. I was watching Friends and it's the one where Ross is Rachel's lobster. You never interrupt that episode." He heard Jenna scolding Maxwell. They turned the corner and there she was, dressed in her ratty old Nsync t-shirt and a pair of grey sweat pants, his grey sweat pants.
"Liam." She gasped, crossing her arms across her chest. "What. What are you doing here?"
Maxwell looked back and forth between the two. "Ahh, I gotta go um, dress Clarice." He quickly mumbled before running off.
"Who the fuck is Clarice? No clue?" Jenna spoke to herself aloud, shaking her head before turning her attention back to Liam. "So, what are you doing here?"
"Well as I stated in my text, We need to talk. And since we haven't done so yet, here I am." He motioned to himself.
Jenna shrugged her shoulders in defeat and motioned for the stairs. She led him into her room and quickly closed the door.
"You look great in my sweatpants," Liam smirked.
"I'll give them back." Jenna's cheeks turned a bright shade of crimson. "Keep them, they look better on you." He sat down on the edge of the bed, patting the side for her to sit.
"Listen, Jenna, I know that you did not want me to know about the investigation. But I am glad you are letting me help. Drake told me about what happened the other night." Liam gave her a sad smile, taking her hand. "I want you to know that your safety means everything to me. I am so very glad you are doing this but, I have to ask. Before we were working on clearing your name so we could be together, is that? Is that still true?"
"Liam." Jenna sighed. "Seeing you with Madeline screwed me up, I became an Alcoholic and this is still something fresh. I don't know what I want. Hell, I don't even know who I am." She stood up, beginning to pace the room.
"I'm sorry. I am so very sorry I just, I didn't mean to upset you. Of course, you're sobriety is very important to me. I am not trying to be selfish, I just. I love you, Jenna. I always will and I will wait for you. As long as I have to. If at the end of all of this, you don't want to be with me, I will just have to deal with that. But, I'm going to be selfish right now because I want you, all of you. All your perfect imperfections." Liam closed the gap between them, stopping her from moving.
"I know who you are," his voice a whisper. "You're incredible, smart, funny, caring," his hand reached out tucking her hair behind her ear. "Beautiful, charming, sexy." His hand caressed her cheek, cupping it gently. His lips a breath away from hers "insatiable." He pressed his lips to hers, claiming them in a soft, cautious yet sensual kiss. Her lips began to move against his in response, and his tongue swept across hers, popping them open with a gasp.
Her mind kept getting in the way, it screamed no, but her body screamed yes! Jenna grasped his shoulders pulling him into her. She made short work of his shirt, letting her hands travel his perfectly sculpted chest. Liam lifted her shirt over her head. His fingers ghosted her bare chest as he slowly made short work of the rest of her clothing, lifting her and carefully laying her down on the bed. His lips found hers as he hovered over her, Jenna's fingers tangled in his sandy locks she looked up at him, her eyes pleading "Liam." She whispered, giving him a clear sign that she wanted him as much as he wanted him.
The next morning Liam awoke to the faint buzzing of his phone on the bedside table. He carefully pawed around until he reached it, glancing one-eyed at the screen in front of him. He let out a heavy breath, slowly turning his attention to the sleeping form beside him. He didn't want to disturb her, she looked so peaceful. The past few weeks had been hard on her. He shook his head making a mental correction, the past almost year had been hell. He slowly crept out of bed, retrieving his discarded clothing.
A far cry from the girl who came from New York for him. They had connected in ways Liam had never dared to dream and he fell, he fell so very hard. Fate wasn't kind to them, someone went to great lengths to force them apart. His stomach was knotted at the thought that that person was still out there and how they could hurt her again if they knew anyone was digging.
"So were you going to pull a me?" Liam turned at the sound of her voice to see her sitting up in bed. A smile tugged on his lips as he took in her wild hair and darkened lips, all signs of their night. "No, but I do have to get going soon." He smirked as he sat down on the bed, slipping on his shoes. "I was going to see about getting us some coffee and food, I'd say we worked up quite the appetite." He flashed her a lopsided grin.
"Yeah, about that." She chuckled nervously.
"You don't have to say anything, Jenna. I know last night wasn't supposed to happen." He paused, pulling his shirt over his head "I know you're in a delicate state right now and I do not want to rush into anything that could hinder your progress but," he turned to face her, taking her hands in his. "I love you and I am willing to wait for you to be ready." Liam's phone began vibrating on the nightside table again, he picked it up letting out a frustrated sigh. "I'm so sorry to cut this short but, I do have to go." He leaned pressing his soft lips to hers and he stood to leave
"And how do you know that I want this?" She called after. Liam abruptly stopped. His hand gripping the door handle. "Because a love like ours just doesn't just go away." He answered, still facing the door. "We will talk soon," he said. Twisting the knob and leaving her room. As soon as the door clicked shut Jenna flung back into the bed letting out a frustrated sigh. What the hell did I get myself into?
After a long shower, Jenna got herself dressed and sat on the Veranda with a book in hand. Maxwell had a meeting to attend in the capital and Olivia and Drake were following up on a lead they were particularly adamant about Jenna not knowing the details of. After reading the same line three times she frustratedly tossed the book onto the floor. Her mind was completely consumed with Liam and what had happened between them. She picked up her phone, finger hovering over Liam's name when a knock came at the door. She jumped up, heart hammering in her chest at who may be on the other side.
" what are you doing here?" her Jaw dropped as she opened the door.
"Why I believe we agreed to go shopping silly. Ready?" Hana stood there with a wide grin, motioning to the town car waiting behind her.
"Oh. I don't know Hana." She nervously twirled her hair. "I'm not even dressed to go out in public." She hesitated.
"That's ok. I can wait a few minutes for you to go change." Hana smiled back at her. Jenna was having a hard time coming up with an excuse when Olivia's voice rang out in her subconscious. You need to get on her good side. Maybe she will spill some secrets.
A smile bloomed on Jenna's face, "of course, Hana. I will be right back." She bound the stairs and rushed into her room. Tossing on a pair of nice jeans and a blouse. She walked over to the dresser for her brush when the apple pendant caught her eye. She was nervous to be alone with Hana, she didn't trust her as far as she could throw her but, perhaps having a sentiment of Liam with her would help. She fastened the pin to the shirt and took off the meet back up with Hana.
The two drove into the capital and went to several shops. The two made small talk, Hana mostly asking about Jenna's time away from court, Hana for the most part remained tight-lipped about anything Jenna could use as evidence she was sabotaging her.
The ladies walked into their final shop of the day, Jenna hesitated at the door. "Why are we here?" Her eyes nervously darted around at the extravagant dresses that adorned the racks.
"Why for the annual Lythkios fire and Ice ball of course. Didn't Olivia tell you?" Hana smirked, taking in Jenna's shocked demeanor.
"N, no.. she failed to mention that."
"Well it is in a couple of weeks," Hana grinned pulling Jenna into the store further. "I must find something spectacular. I need your help. Besides, we have to find something Devine for you as well."
The two browsed through racks upon racks, pulling multiple dresses. The sales associates set them up in two dressing rooms and the girls began trying on their finds. "So Jenna, have you had much time to speak to Liam? I know the two of you split on stressful terms." Hana called out.
"Um, we have spoken a bit," Jenna responded, behind the curtain.
"Well that's good. It's good you two can remain friends after, well, what happened between the two of you."
"Mmhmm." Jenna mumbled as she fidgeted with the dresses zipper.
Friends, huh. Pretty sure just friends don't have sex and say they love you she thought to herself. What am I thinking? Get ahold of yourself Jenna, of course you're just friends.
Jenna let out an audible sigh, promptly clasping her hand over her mouth.
"Are you ok, Jenna?" She heard Hana ask, this time she was right outside of her dressing room.
"Oh. Um yeah. Just not sure about this dress thats all." She lied, sliding the curtain over and exiting the stahl.
"Wow. I know Red is usually Olivia's color but, that dress is stunning on you."
"Thanks." Jenna blushed, she looked at herself in the mirror, catching a small glimpse of her former self, she smiled remembering the last time she attended the Lythikos fire and Ice ball. She let her mind wander while Hana droned on..
She stood in her room at Lythkios, admiring herself in the mirror. The dress was gorgeous. A strapless light blue satin dress that hugged every curve. The bust encrusted with rhinestones that sparkled against the lights, and the slit that hit right at the hip left little to the imagination, well it would leave very little to Liams anyway.
"Knock knock." Maxwells voice rang out as the door cracked open. "Come in Max." She smirked as Maxwell gasped. She did a little twirl and let out a giggle. "Little blossom you look amazing."
"Thanks max. You've really out done yourself this time."
"Yes, yes, perhaps Maxwell can become a stylist to help keep our beloved Ramsford afloat." Jennas smile faltered as he entered the room. " That is if you completely fail us as our sponsor " Bertrand snapped.
"Must you always be so doom and gloom Bertrand?" She rolled her eyes.
"Yeah Bertrand lighten up. Little blossom is going to kill it tonight. Just trust me." Maxwell winked at her as he defended himself.
Jenna ignored the two as the bickered back and forth. Before she knew it she was in the ballroom, she scanned the room until her eyes met his. Like a moth to a flame the two gravitated towards each other. Liam reached for her hand, his lips softly brushing her knuckles.
"My lady, I must say you are absolutely breathtaking in that dress."
"Why thank you, your highness. You look rather dashing yourself. But I must say it does look awfully coincidental that our attire seems to match."
Liam gave her a smirk "Coincidence or a well thought out plan. I will leave that assumption up to you, Lady Jenna."
"Liam, you didn't." She gasped, a small giggle escaping her.
"I did." He smirked again, just as the music started up. "May I have this dance?"
Jenna took his hand as he led her to the dance floor. He took her hand, his other resting on the small of her back. She could hear the gasps and murmurs of the crowd around her. "Everyone is starting liam."
"Let them. Everyone is already talking about the two of us, they have it pegged that I will choose you to be my queen."
"Is that so?" Jenna smirked. "Hoe scandalous of you, your highness. And what do you say about all of this gossip going around?"
"I say they're on to something." His tone playful but she could see the seriousness in his eyes. "If I had my way I would tell everyone to go home. I'm not supposed to play favorites but, nobody compares. And maybe I dont care who knows anymore."
"So I supposed Liam told you about his deadline then?" Hanas voice pulled her from her daydream.
"His what?"
"Why his deadline. He has until the end of the month to choose a queen or the council will be forced to take action."
The color drained from Jennas face, she stumbled back until her legs gave out and she fell into the chair. "He. He what? How can this be happening?"
"Oh, he didn't tell you?" Hana feigned concern. Jenna shook her head no.
"You don't look so good Jenna. Perhaps we should head back to Ramsford." Hana patted her leg. Jenna nodded in agreement.
Jenna quickly changed back into her clothes as Hana paid for her dress. The ride back to Ramsford was quiet. Jenna's mind going a mile a minute.
Hana cleared her throat. "Jenna, I have to ask you something. I seen the way you reacted back there when you found out about Liams time limit. And well, I have to ask. Do you still have feelings for him?"
Jenna's eyes widened, words became hard to come by. "I. I. Why do you ask Hana? Is there something else I don't know?"
"Well, I did not want to be the one to tell you this but," hana let out a sigh. "After you left Liam was in a bad place. The council had been hounding him to take a queen, and show the country that he was stable. Liam and I made a pact that if he did not find someone by then that we would marry and have a political marriage. For Cordonia of course."
Jenna's eyes snapped shut, her stomach churned as the visions of Madline draped in Liams arm swirled in her head, morphing into hana and Liam. The country would want an heir, the thought of the two of them together pushed her right over the edge.
"Stop the car." She shouted as the driver pulled over onto the side of the road. Jenna jumped out in just enough time, vomiting into the brush. She returned a few minutes later, Hana giving her an unreadable look.
"Are you ok?" She asked. Jenna nodded her head. "I dont think lunch agreed with me." She lied. They pulled up to Ramsford Jenna gave a quick goodbye and she rushed inside. She watched from the window as hana drove away she grabbed a set of Keys and quickly made her way to the one place she didnt want to be but needed to go.
She had no trouble entering, it was as if they were expecting her. She walked through the front door, up the stairs and stood in front of the door. She knocked hard and when the door swung open her hand flew up and connected with a loud slap.
Bastien stepped forward, Liam held up his hand. "Give us a minute Bastien."
Bastien nodded as he stepped out of the door, closing it behind him.
"Is it true?" Jenna questioned.
" I'm not sure what you're referring to my love. If you would just have a seat and."
"Is it true Liam? Are you actually going to marry Hana?"

The social season was well underway, just a few short weeks and he would be forced to choose a bride. Five suitors from five noble houses across the country and globe with Cordonian ties all vying for his hand. He should be gloating about having five women throw themselves at him, wanting a piece of whatever attention he chose to give, and under normal circumstances he would relish in it. He was dubbed the playboy prince after all but this was something else entirely. The desperation in their voices when he spoke to them, some doing a better job than most if their words didn't give them away their faces told it all. He was trained to read people from a very young age, body language, and touch, all tell a story and these women wanted one thing, the crown.
Leo stood in the middle of a crowded room speaking to Lady Jessica and her parents Lord and Lady Britton. Jessica was one of his suitors, as he listened to Lady Britton ramble on about being a suitor during Constantine's first social season, he felt the panic spread through his chest. Of course, she didn't leave out the part where Constantine chose his mother, the mother who couldn't cut it as a Royal and fled, leaving him behind. Lord Britton seemed to have enough of his wife's antics he cleared his throat at the mention of Lady Britton's talents of playing the flute.
"Yes, Our Jessica is also very talented in the musical area. She mastered playing the piano at the age of four. Isn't that right, Jessica?" He turned his attention towards his daughter.
"Why yes, Father. That is correct. I am also skilled in archery, ballet, and painting." She answered right on cue, giving a shy smile and batting her eyes.
"All wonderful skills a wife should possess, wouldn't you agree your highness?" Lord Britton's attention was now on him.
"Why yes, Lord Britton. I agree, all wonderful talents." Leo politely answered, desperate to find a way out of his current conversation.
"Splendid?" Lord Britton laughed before turning serious. "The end of the social season is quickly approaching, if I may be so bold as to ask, have you made a decision yet?"
The panic now had spread throughout his body, his nerve endings were tingling and his hands began to sweat. "No. I have not come to a decision yet." Leo carefully chose his words, "The decision does not come lightly, choosing Cordonias next queen is something to be taken seriously, I intend to take careful consideration in choosing my future bride." He settled on a quick, sharp answer, in hopes to shut him up; it seems to have worked as he watched the fear flash before lord Britton's eyes. He nodded stiffly. "Of course your highness."
Leo hated making small talk with the suitor's parents, his eyes did a quick scan of the room and finally, he spotted his out.
"Now if you will excuse me, there is a matter that requires my attention." Leo cut the conversation off at the knees, he turned to leave, "Lord Britton, Lady Britton, Lady Jessica." He nodded to the three quickly walking through the ballroom and disappearing behind a door on the far side. He walked down the long hall and into one of the studies his father often used to discuss private matters during events.
He stripped his jacket off immediately, tossing it onto the floor, loosening his tie as he paced the room. Breathing in and out he gripped a hold of the tie yanking it free from his neck. Leo walked over to the bar cart and poured a large glass of scotch, quickly letting the contents burn its way down his throat.
"It's too much. To much. I, Im not cut out for this. I can't do this." He began to pace, grabbing a fist full of his hair and letting out a frustrated growl. He turned, stopping dead in his tracks to find a beautiful brunette standing there with a nervous look on her face. Lady Ava was attending the social season with her uncle, one of Constantine's Allies from Australia. She and Leo had grown close during the season, and while she wasn't one of his suitors, he still found ways to be around her.
"I'm sorry, I. I should go." Ava stammered, averting her eyes.
"How long have you been standing there?" Leo breathed out.
"Not long." She quickly answered, casting her eyes to the side.
"Long enough I'm sure." He let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Well, I guess you'll be running for the hills now. Now that you know what a freak show I am."
"Is that what you want?" Her question threw him off, guard. It wasn't a question he was asked often, no one took into consideration his wants.
"I don't understand." Her question confused him.
"I didn't think it was a hard question." Ava closed the door and made her way across the room. "Do you want me to leave? Is that what you want?"
Leo stood there staring at her. Out of all his suitors, she was the only one he made a real connection with only she wasn't a suitor. "No." He finally answered.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She questioned and he shook his head.
"What do you want me to say? I fell apart, I lost my composure, I cracked under pressure, what a fucking great king I'll make." He let out another sarcastic snort.
Ava closed the distance between them, "You're allowed to fall apart a little." She placed a comforting hand on his arm. "Even the best of us fall apart sometimes, I know this has to be hard, I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. I know this isn't what you wanted out of life."
"It isn't but, it's what I was born to do, literally. I don't get a say, what I want doesn't matter. I don't get time to myself. " He turned away to stare out the window.
"It matters to me." She spoke and he turned to look at her again. "Is that what you want? Time alone? Because right now, you're not in a ballroom, it's just the two of us."
Leo crossed the room closing the distance between the two of them. He reached out softly cupping her face with his hands. "That's all I really want and need. Some time with just you." He lowered his voice, eyes searching her face.
"Leo." She breathed out, closing her eyes.
"You're the only one who gets me here, you see me as more than a crown." Leo lifted her chin forcing her to look at him.
"Because you are more than a crown. You're more than all of this." She motioned around to nothing. "At the end of all of this, when you make your choice, Just remember that the crown doesn't make the man. You can shape yourself and this country in whatever way you see it." Ava smiled at him and with that Leo leaned in claiming her lips in a soft kiss, before pulling away and resting his forehead on hers.
"I do not know what the next few weeks will hold," he spoke. "But just know that you are special to me, Ava."
Ava wrapped her arms tightly around Leo's waist. The two stayed that way for a few minutes before reluctantly pulling apart.
"We should probably get back before someone notices we are both missing. What a scandal that would cause." She giggled.
"If it's a scandal you're looking for, I can arrange for something more worth it than a hug." Leo waggled his brows which earned and eye roll.
"You sir, are diabolical. Now Let's go." She motioned towards the door.
"Its all I have going for me and wouldn't want to be any other way." Leo shrugged and smiled. He wasn't sure who he would end up with at the end of the season but he would hold her memory for a lifetime.
