Children are taught about the universe outside when they're young. They're told that it's already gone, but that it's also still out there. It's a tricky universe, the teachers who aren't very good with words say.

Being an ambassador to that universe would take courage in someone not City-born. It's a matter of accepting mortality and descending into the world of finites. For someone who's never seen the universe where their parents, family and friends came from, it's an adventure.

She asked to travel with the Grandfather, while they worked together. He told her that she had better things to do then accompany him in the outside universe. He never elaborated on that.
