Leffingwell spent 1906-1914 living on the North Slope of Alaska, writing a huge paper on the geography and geology of the Canning River area. His new map of the region incorporated Inupiaq place names wherever possible, but when no such names existed, he used the names of people who had done him favors while living in the region.
