So many leftists are exactly like conservative bigots but will never admit it. They both want to bully people but use their "values" to get a free pass to do so.
In the case of "leftists", see:
- horrendous unmitigated antisemitism
- gatekeeping in the queer community about who can and can't use various words and labels
- lust for a violent revolution as the proposed solution to capitalism
- concerning levels of shaming directed towards people who make mistakes or haven't had a reasonable chance to learn
Etc etc etc
7 things I’m into this week: “Progressive” is a meaningless word
Every week I round up the best stuff on the internet and share it here.
There’s an old (very NSFW) George Carlin bit about taking all the golf courses from the rich and turning the land into space for housing the poor. It’s a joke, but it’s an idea I’ve grown to love more and more as the years go by. In a similar vein, here’s the story of a New Orleans golf course that now functions as a community farm, complete with paid internships for high school kids and a 30% donation quota for local low-income folks. Such a rad project.
At the risk of this becoming a predominantly Moomin blog, here’s another cool story about an anti-loneliness cafe in Japan predicated upon that lovely set of Finnish characters.
“Progressive” has become a pretty meaningless word, and in few places is that as apparent as it is in Seattle. My fellow Seattle DSA organizer Shaun Scott--a far more committed, active, and indefatigable guy than myself--wrote about that very phenomenon here.
Leon Bridges, Gary Clark Jr., and Jon Batiste teamed up to cover Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young’s “Ohio” to be released in conjunction with Ken Burns’ new Vietnam documentary. It’s haunting. (You’ll need to open it in Spotify to play the full version.)
In these trying times, it’s important to know who your friends and allies truly are. In that spirit...fuck BIll Maher.
I’m a huge fan of corvids, crows in particular, but I’ve got love for ravens too. Did you know they’re capable of anxious thoughts and abstraction? Pretty cool!
I haven’t cited it enough in here, but The New Republic has done a lot of good work surrounding the movement-building of the Left since November. Three excellent pieces here, all from Sarah Jones, focus on Leftist military veterans being left behind by both parties, why Emmanuel Macron is not the model the Democrats should be emulating, and how indigenous activists and blue-collar workers are building solidarity in New Hampshire.
7 things archive here.
When did being a leftist become synonymous with being lazy? Like I've heard from so many people this week that changing our consumption won't have any effect on climate change because 100 companies are responsible for 90% of emissions or whatever and it's like...buddy... who do you think is keeping those companies in business?
Like I'm all for change on a governmental and corporate level but you can't just pass off personal responsibility while the world burns. Do something, or you aren't behaving any better than a climate change-denying conservative.

(National Sentinel) Marxists on the Move: Democrat Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware made clear this week what his party has turned into: A group of Marxist ‘revolutionaries’ who seek to not only overturn elections by force but also destroy the civil society in the process.
During an appearance on MSNBCwith Chuck Todd Wednesday, the host asked Coons what he thought about all of the Leftist…
