I am rewatching Karasuno's match with Shiratorizawa and no matter how I look at it, this whole arc is big great and powerful message about how being different is good and shouldn't be policed. Yes, Shiratorizawa relied too much on Ushijima, but he was still their ace and the best player we ever saw, and he was left-handed. To top it the 4th set for Karasuno was also won by an action made with a left hand. It makes you really appreciate how much thought author put in the story when you see them tackling the issue of correcting left-handness in Japan. Those messages which bring to the spotlight the issues within society are the ones I live for when I consume any medium, as those powerful messages have a chance to make people start thinking more about world they live in, noticing and criticizing the biases they maybe weren't aware of before.
I didn't put much thought into that before as for me kids in class who were left-handed was nothing new. We do not have any tradition of shutting people of due to that sole fact. More like when I was small, and we had a friend who was left-handed, we thought that it was very cool and tried to practice writing with left hand, because of this one person who showed us this new way we weren't aware of before. We of course sucked tremendously at that, but when I look back at it, it was nice that people like that weren't forced to change and fit into right-handed majority, even if society at large makes things suitable for left-handed people in stores not only hard to get but also more expensive due to small number of people who need them (you know, stupid profit logic). Anyway, this bias is something which I think should disappear and messages like that showed in Haikyuu!! help a lot with changing the world for the better.
I hope this message hit Japanese society hard.
Also, we should send a big hug and a lot of love to Wakatoshi’s father for protecting his left-handness from family tradition of correcting that.
