2/19/2019 1.04 miles/1.67 kilometers
This thing is WHACK (Oh and a high score!)
YTD: 154.66 miles
50 days in a row
Supposed to be an easier run week (than the previous week) but since I missed 3 miles last week this week’s plan has it about the same mileage as last week. Fine.
10 minutes on the stairmill, a little faster than the last 10 minutes. A few more floors, and WAY more elevation! To recap, 73 floors was 481 feet, this was 80 floors at 853 feet. I figured out it was just reporting the height of whatever thing I had just climbed past - and they don’t have anything between the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Transamerica building in San Francisco. Thus why 51 floors = 481 feet (Pyramid of Giza again) and 73 floors is also “481 feet”.
Enough of that nonsense - I decided I’d report the elevation more accurately going forward. According to the internet, the height of each step is 8 inches, and it considers a floor to be 16 steps. Thus, a floor is 10′8″. I plugged that information into my spreadsheet, entered today’s 80 floors, multiplied by 10.66, and got...
That’s right folks, today’s elevation happened to be actually accurate.
But I’ll still start counting it this way going forward.
Taekwondo was a small class. I was the highest belt. First we paired off for self defense. I got paired up with the next highest belt, a cho dan bo/deputy black belt who’s one test away from his junior equivalent black belt but won’t be testing this weekend. Regardless, he’s a young kid (somewhere around 12-14 I’d wager) who doesn’t seem to have much oomph in his gusto. So the self defense was pretty lackluster. Then forms - chun-ji, taegeuk 1-8, koryo, and keumgang. We doubled up the ‘target’ forms for each person’s belt level, so we did taegeuk 5 twice for Kevin (a high blue belt), taegeuk 7 twice for Jeff (high brown belt), koryo twice for Spiro, and keumgang twice for me. Then a quick round of “keep the plastic grocery bag afloat” (quite reminiscent of hackey sack) and that was pretty much it.
I had brought my re-breakable board to class and asked Master Mark to hold it for me, since I’d never broken it. He first held it a pretty non-standard way for a sidekick, and it was a little high for me. Sure enough my support leg flew out from under me and I landed on my side like a doof*. He held it normally and I broke it. Verdict: it’s harder than the thick boards we use during testing. But I’m not sure quite how much.
I practiced a few hammer fist strikes since I’ll be breaking a brick this weekend (since I wasn’t asked to break one to get my 1st dan (why**!?!?)).
Beat Saber after the kids went down. Continued doing new songs on expert level at 90% speed. I actually did pretty well! Finished up with $100 bill and Rum ‘n’ Bass on Hard at 150% speed, and then Pop Stars on expert normal speed. Good times.
Spent some time in my compression boots reading a few chapters of a book on mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh, then stretched out in my leg stretcher while massaging my thighs with my Hypervolt. Ah, the good life.
* Now my leg’s killing me. I might actually end up having a bruise (which is pretty rare for me).
** Actually I think I know why - Master Chung is pretty much checked out and ready to retire. i think he just didn’t get around to buying any bricks. Since Master Chris has been taking over, they’re being sure to take care of issues like this and then some.
