Remember in TVD when we got to actually see the characters find out about stuff and their reactions to it? Whether it be something bad happening, or someone dying, or someone turning off their humanity, or even stuff with relationships, we actually saw how it affected everyone. And it made the friendships within the group and their relationships with each other feel so much more real and special. When crap would happen, they’d talk and work together to find a solution, they’d all be calling and texting each other with updates. If someone died, we saw them finding out and telling each other, we saw them crying together. And it all made the group feel more tight-knit and showed just how much they all cared about each other. There was so much emotion.
And I think that’s one of the many things missing from Legacies and their group of characters. They have all been established as a group, and most of them friends, sort of? But as far as the friendships and any closeness within the group goes, I feel like it’s more often stated than shown. I think season 1 was much better, and we got to see more moments between the characters, but there’s been so much less of that this season. Stuff will happen and we don’t even seen everyone finding out about it, we don’t see their reactions, we’ve just gotta assume that they somehow found out at some point, but we’ve rarely been seeing any emotional responses to what’s been going on. (Such as: everyone remembering Hope, the Saltzmans getting trapped in the prison world, Kai’s return, Landon’s powers, Dark Josie, Raf’s return, Raf being dead, Landon being dead, etc.) The writers have been shoving so much into this season, and rushing through scenes between the characters, they’ll barely talk and then it cuts to the next scene. I feel like there’s been such a huge lack of emotion between the characters this season and their reactions to what’s been going on around them and with each other. I want to actually see how these things are affecting them and hear them talk about it. The writers are so busy trying to throw in humor and clever one-liners and as many plotlines and side characters as possible that I think we are losing out on some special moments between the main characters. They did a great job in TVD with balancing the crazy plots and moments with the characters, and I think they did a great job doing that in season 1 of Legacies too, while also adding more humor. But I feel like this season has been seriously lacking in the connections and closeness between a lot of the characters and the group as a whole.
