The Perils of Legacy Systems
I have a personal story to share today. Something I managed to fix, even though I have little IT training. But I have plenty of experience in finding the root cause of programming issues and I applied those skills to do a forensic analysis and remediation. While the computer I work from is up to date in operating system, security fixes, and runs dedicated, also up to date anti-viral software, my laptop...is not. Some of that, quite frankly, is because a new laptop is exorbitantly expensive and not justifiable in my budget considering what I use it for. Some of it is a push back against planned obsolescence. The device still works, why would I replace it and add to the already enormous pile of e-waste?
To give you an idea of just how old we’re talking, I bought this laptop 20+ years ago. At the time it was refurbished and running Windows 7. When Windows 8 released, I reluctantly upgraded it. Not sure how many of you remember those days, but 8.1 followed on its heels fairly quickly since it was plainly necessary. I used that laptop for everything – browsing, gaming, banking – until I bought my current desktop system which came with Windows 10. The laptop sat unused for years. It missed the deadline for free upgrade to 10, so there it stayed, running 8.1.
The trouble is, that’s now a legacy operating system. It has no further security patches, is not supported for most software updates, its kernel is old and slow. The laptop has hardware problems too. The battery is defunct, and I removed it to prevent a chemical reaction that could lead to potential explosion. It’s prone to overheating. Some of the keys are burned out, which means I have to use an onscreen keyboard. Even the USB ports – all four of them, man I miss those days – are wonky at best. External HD? Connects just fine. A mouse? Not so much. But the core of the device still works. The processor is stable, it has available RAM, it connects to the internet perfectly well. It’s useful enough for what I use it for, namely nighttime playlists. (I gotta have background noise to sleep, and it can’t be white noise.)
About a week ago I ran a routine registry cleaner, which included a junk file cleaner. And suddenly it didn’t work quite so well. Rebooting, and indeed even waking up from sleep mode, took twice as long as it should. Video files – online and off – would not load. Even the screen brightness, which I keep low for obvious reasons, could no longer be adjusted.
My first clue was a popup that my AMD driver didn’t have the correct key. After some research, I determined I had corrupted file saves somewhere, likely exacerbated by the cleaner (lesson learned). So I tried to install a fresh set of drivers. Well...they aren’t available anymore. Windows 8.1 is now two OS’s out of date. But what I did find was a repair tool, offered by AMD themselves. It partially worked. The systems were running again, although the lag in video output was still extreme. We’re talking five full minutes of buffering for each and every video file regardless of length. As well, according to my Task Manager, the Windows Audio Graph Isolation was using too many resources. Could have been a memory leak, malware or another corrupted file. I uninstalled the Realtek audio software and attempted to install a newer version. Again, it was no longer available for the OS. Now what?
System restore. With the corrupted audio software uninstalled, restoring to a previous version meant that would be reinstalled (as it is a default part of the device’s software and I hadn’t deleted the file location just in case). But it would be a ‘clean’ version, no corrupted files. Lo and behold! After hours of restoring, initializing and several reboots, my ancient laptop was working properly again. I did have to run another AMD repair, but that took comparatively little time.
I am one person, fixing my personal laptop in the wee hours of the night. I have some small amount of IT experience gained mostly by doing exactly this. Messing around and knowing that anything catastrophic can be undone by reverting to a previous version. Within reason. Granted, I could have had this whole thing done in a sitting if I was able to dedicate all my attention to it. Part of the problem was doing this late at night when I should have been sleeping. But it still would have taken many hours (at least eight by my calculation) to unravel this issue.
When we in the cybersecurity industry urge corporate entities to stay on top of updates and patches, this is why. It took me several days of analysis and hours of literal waiting around for the device to reboot in order to find out if what I tried was going to be successful.
