Announced today on the website of Legacy Tree Genealogists, they have a free chart that you can now create to discover what percentages of DNA were inherited from your grandparents. Here is a snippet from their announcement: (Legacy Tree) "... has announced the release of a free online tool which enables users to easily discover the percentages and segments of DNA inherited from each grandparent, often referred to as chromosome mapping. The tool produces a chart illustrating shared DNA segments by utilizing results from three autosomal DNA tests: one for themselves, one for a paternal grandparent and one for a maternal grandparent." Now, if you are like me, who does not have any living grandparents that can be tested, you too can also try out this chart. "The tool may also be used by those without living grandparents to determine which portions of their own DNA were inherited by their descendants.” So with that, I will be trying this out. Legacy Tree
Tomorrow I am excited to be going to look at a tree for a long-time customer. It is a Weeping White Birch, and I remember looking at it many years ago with this client. He has some concerns about the tree's continuing health, as he doesn't want to lose it. It was a large stately tree even back when I last saw it, and so I can empathize with his concern. Being a life-long tree guy, I'll do my best to help him out.
The reason for my unusual excitement is the history of this tree. The tree's owner (a rather aged man) tells me that his parents bought it originally from my grandparents in the spring of 1941! Cripes! That was just before World War II started!
Now I know generally that many of the trees that dot the landscape of the Magic Valley came from past generations of my family, and some are at least if not older than this one. But this is a tree with not a typically long lifespan in our climate, it is on a main thoroughfare in Twin Falls so it can be viewed regularly, and it has a specific story that it's owner has lived and loved to tell.
Tomorrow I want him to tell me that story again, as a reminder of what a great legacy a tree can be. Heck, I probably won't even charge a service call.
