mattel just lost the dc license and we're all nervous abt whether the new stuff will be any good, so it's a good time to look back at how far we've come and remember that change can be for the better. #batman #kenner #lodk #legendsofthedarkknight #90stoys https://www.instagram.com/p/B67qQMOg7q_/?igshid=gzmell39olor
“The ABC’s of The Joker” - I is for “Images”: Beginning in 1989, the publication Legends of the Dark Knight retells the early days of the Batman and some of his early encounters with notable allies and villains. In the anniversary issue of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight 50 from early September 1993, Dennis O'Neil pens the story “Images”, which is a modern version of Batman and The Joker’s ‘first’ meeting in Batman (Vol 1) 1 from Spring 1940, originally written by Bill Finger and illustrated by Bob Kane. As Batman breaks up a mob gang, he comes across an unfamiliar clown called The Joker. Soon, Batman, Commissioner Gordon and the entire GCPD are trying to protect the newest targets by Joker, who announces their deaths at different points in the evening. However, one by one Batman is too late and the victims meet their demise through Joker’s laughing venom, a compound created by Joker’s cousin Melvin Reipan. As he tracks down Joker and his next target, Batman slowly discovers why Joker, someone he thought he never met before, is more familiar than expected. In their last encounter, Batman dressed as one of Joker’s goons, tells him that he knows Joker as the Red Hood who, after a fight at a chemical refinery a few months prior, fell into an acid bath but the body was never recovered. With a short fight, Batman knocks out Joker in one swift punch. Legends of the Dark Knight 50 ends with a series of pin-up posters by several DC Comics artists in a series called “Batman: Visions of a Legend”, where each share their unique interpretations of what it means to be a legendary hero. Posters include illustrations by Jim Lee, Howard Chaykin, Kevin Maguire, P. Craig Russell, Sandy Plunkett, Brian Stelfreeze, Mark Schultz, Kevin Nowlan, Mike Zeck and the cover art (presented) by Brian Bolland and Rachel Birkett. This early encounter between the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime beautifully showcases this continued dynamic between good and evil that exists in their stories today. ✌🏼💜💚🃏📚
