1944 01 Zhitomir Tiger I Michael Wittmann Pz Div Leibstandarte - Jason Wong - box art Takom
The Action: Receiving the Knight's Cross
The action this specific Tiger I Ausf. E Mid-Production with Zimmerit is famous for is its direct association with Wittmann receiving one of his highest awards.
The Combat Period (Late 1943 – Early January 1944): The LSSAH was heavily engaged in defensive and counter-attacking battles in the Ukraine as the Soviet forces pushed west. Wittmann and his crew distinguished themselves by achieving a high number of tank kills during this brutal fighting, which included engagements around Zhitomir and Berdichev.
The Ceremony at Vinnitsa (January 14, 1944): The tank "S04" was the vehicle Wittmann was using when he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
The Iconic Photo: The famous photographs—which almost all kits depicting "S04" are based on—were taken on or around January 14, 1944, at Vinnitsa. These photos show Wittmann, his gunner Balthasar "Bobby" Woll, and the rest of his crew being congratulated by their divisional commander. Crucially, the photos show:
"S04" clearly marked on the turret.
88 kill rings painted on the barrel of the 88mm gun (though these were almost certainly painted for the photo ceremony and likely removed quickly thereafter for operational security).

Le seguenti foto mostrate non hanno alcune fine politico ne di esaltazione razziale Feldgrau Gruppe attended the usual winter convention in the Austro-Hungarian fortress “Forte Ardietti”, which dates back to the XIX century. The aim was to recreate both the barracks life and the combats which could involve a WWII soldier. The following pictures shown are not for political purposes and neither are for racial reasons.
