Last night I dreamed of Lembit Opik again. It was 2007, it was Wales, the sky was blue and the blossoms were like babies' toes.

How long since I heard Lembit Opik's voice calling me across the moors? Now I run to his grave, a shovel in my hand.

Our children, and our children's children, and their children too - o if we had children, the stories they would tell, of Wales and Westminster and the dark forests of Estia.

Trouble no quiet, kind heart; leave sunny imaginations hope. Let it be theirs to conceive the delight of joy born again fresh out of great terror, the rapture of rescue from peril, the wondrous reprieve from dread, the fruition of return. Let them picture union and a happy succeeding life.

When he lost his seat, I said to people - as recently as last night - this guy has got to get in the House of Lords because he has spent 32 years of a 55-year existence in Parliament. Without that support, he is in real danger of dying. We talked about it as openly as that. I was really concerned, because that was the support mechanism for him.
