Oikawa Headcanons
He has owned a telescope since childhood and loves looking at the stars at night, he actually knows a lot about astronomy and the galaxy. He owns a lot of books and charts
Sometimes he calls Iwaizumi when looking at the stars and Iwaizumi lets him ramble about space even though it’s 3 AM because Oikawa is genuinely excited and Iwaizumi doesn't really have the heart to make him stop
He owns a shitload of alien themed t-Shirts but is really picky about shirts/clothes that depict space because a lot of times they’re wrong and he’s not about to have incorrect galaxies on his legs, thanks
He is 100% convinced that aliens are real and watches all the shitty alien documentaries he can find, even if they don’t have subtitles.
He has serious anxiety around his own abilities as a volleyball player and as his value as a person without his volleyball skills
He is desperately afraid that if he were ever unable to play volleyball he would be forgotten/abandoned by those around him
He hates geniuses because he feels like he can’t keep up with them with hard work and that he will eventually be cast aside for someone with “natural” talent
If left to his own devices he can and will practice to the point of exhaustion and injury. Iwaizumi keeps an eye on his practice times and it’s an unspoken agreement that when Iwaizumi says it’s time to stop, it’s time to stop.
He does very well in his classes, volleyball is more important but he takes school seriously too.
He is, at heart, an optimist. He tries to positively spin as many situations as he can. Maybe, in part, to keep the anxiety at bay. It works sometimes.
He has an extremely high emotional and interpersonal intelligence. He is extremely good at reading peoples moves, actions, and motivations. It is part of what makes him such a good setter, he is able to pick apart his opponents weaknesses and exploit them, while reading his own team’s current strengths and setting each player up for success.
He is also extremely good at masking his own emotions. He has no less than three personas that he could wear at any given time, none of them honest. Iwaizumi can usually tease them apart. Usually.
He thinks the attention he gets from his fan club is funny (and any attention is good attention) but it scares him to think that people only like him this much because he’s good at volleyball.
He is terrified of people seeing his true personality and leaving him.
He likes winning games more than just “yay, we won!” but as a confirmation that he is still a good setter and that he hasn't been caught up to yet. Each win is a confirmation that he still gets to play.
He is confident in his looks. He knows he’s pretty and he has a nightly routine to keep it that way. His anxiety will sometimes stem to “What if people only like me because I’m nice to look at?”
Oikawa fears that he won’t get any attention that he doesn't demand. It’s why his outward personality is so loud and imposing.
Oikawa is constantly invading Iwaizumi’s personal space in some way. Studying, riding the bus to games, walking in the hallways, just hanging out. It’s always been this way and Iwaizumi allows it to happen because he's aware of Oikawa’s insecurity.
Oikawa is actually really messy. His primary focus is volleyball and he just doesn't view picking things up as important. He has no less than 4 volleyballs scattered around his room/house. He doesn’t leave trash around, though.
His own appearance, however, is always very neat. He doesn’t like to leave the house looking like he just rolled out of bed.
