Sometimes when she starts to cook dinner one of the girls will keep her company. They circle through on the regular, lingering for seconds to the second dinner is finished and they can grab a plate, head for the table to get a head start on filling their stomach before the rest of their sisters. Anything and everything is welcome in Noah’s eyes. The company -- that’s half of why she worked with Astoria to let her take the role. No payment from the sorority’s board beyond for food and house repairs, for her moving from that tiny townhouse into her space here. It’s like a volunteer job. Being a professor pays enough anyway, and now there’s no conflict of interest.
Her grading of the sisters in her class is still double checked sometimes by another member of her department. That Noah can’t begrudge them for. Who would trust her at her word other than a fool in a world like this?
Well, the girls seem to. A level of trust that Noah tries to meet every day, meets now as she keeps herself from hovering, trying to help Selena with her homework before she’s asked. That was made clear enough to her from her first few months with them -- don’t ask after homework, let us ask for help from you instead. Too much pressure, and fair enough. So she busies herself with cutting vegetables, carrots falling apart underneath her knife to join peppers, the water chestnuts and other such things. Just a pile of colors now more than anything, Noah thinks. It’s hard to tell with the weariness in her from a long day of helping students.
“I can’t decide with my brain how it is,” Noah says to Selena after a moment. “For stir fry, you think you and your sisters would prefer chicken, beef, tofu or shrimp? We have all three prepared for meals but it’s. Interchangeable. And I’m working off of three brain cells right now.” She adds the last part with a laugh, setting her knife down to pick up her water glass and drink down half of it in a few gulps.
“Personally I have no preference, thus... having to pull you away from being a silent presence. Sorry, hon.”
