“I never know what to say when you say things like that,” she says quietly, looking away almost bashfully. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, how much Leo loves her, the force of it almost tangible. “I love you,” she says after a moment, looking back up at him.

He smiles, bright, happy. Azalea fills him with a kind of joy no one else has ever actually managed. “You don’t have to say anything, ever. It’s just important to me that you know it.” He hasn’t always been good at communicating actual, genuine feelings, but it’s easy when it comes to her.

He’s handing Azalea her promised cocoa, having arrived thirty minutes after saying he was on his way, which makes him late by his own estimation and exactly on time by hers. It’s both pleasant and disconcerting that she knows him as well as she does, but he pushes the thought aside and settles onto the couch. “So what d’you wanna do? Watch a movie? Pretend to try to do homework while I end up just distracting you? Late night pancake run?” His fingers drum on his leg, feeling more restless than usual though he’s not sure why.

Leo had never been particularly good at keeping track of time. It came with the immortal thing. And ten years felt like the blink of an eye in the face of forever. At least, it did up until those ten years were spent away from Azalea. When he knew he couldn’t go back to her, not for a long time, suddenly ten years felt like an eternity. Things had gotten rough and he’d needed to flee and he couldn’t take her with him, as much as he wanted to. He couldn’t mess up her life like that. Even now, he was reluctant to come back, but he was exhausted, bruised, and bloodied, and he didn’t know where else to go. He was barely standing outside her front door and he’d wasted energy debating on whether or not to knock. Finally he took a deep, painful breath-- he hadn’t noticed the cracked ribs before now, great-- before rapping his knuckles on her door.

It’s been a bad day. She woke up feeling off and things have just spiraled from there. Leo’s gone to who knows where, Violet and her mom are both not answering her texts, and she doesn’t know what else to do. She’s got herself curled up on the couch, waiting for someone to pop back in to her life.

When the door opens, she’s in the middle of reading something on her phone and so she just mumbles her hello. But then suddenly a ball of her fur is placed in her lap and she smiles just a little before the puppy nestles into her. That’s all it takes for her to start crying, hugging the small dog close to her chest.

She looks up at Leo, all smiles and tears. “They’re so perfect,” is all she manages to get out before just burying her face in the dogs fur.

He’s excited to plop the squirming ball of fluff into her lap, because honestly, who doesn’t like puppies? Only crazy people, that’s who. He smiles brightly at her as she hugs the puppy, laughing softly at her comment. “They are, aren’t they? They’re like the most perfect thing on this planet. Puppies and baby ducks. Baby ducks are so cute, Azalea. I can’t handle it.” He rocks forward and back on his feet for a moment before dropping on the couch next to her. “Her name is Delilah and we’re dog sitting her for the downstairs neighbors. You don’t mind, right? It’s just for tonight. And look at how cute she is!”
