to this one person who is clearly reading Scapegoated for the first time, first of all, welcome! Second of all, seeing shit like this in my inbox genuinely never gets old so ty😭
I know MC has gotten a lot of hate for being perceived as the one who broke up the band, but before that were there fans that shipped her with each of the boys as the only girl? Any particular pairings that were most popular? Idk how much of a thing fan shipping was in the 70s though
Léon and MC due to shared song credits on certain songs as well as their meet markedly being what started the band. Most fans though, especially female fans, perceive MC’s presence in the band as sisterly. They took what she said debunking romance rumours at face value and perceived her dynamic within the group as sibling-like. To them intra-band romance would’ve essentially been incest.
Think the Beatles’ reaction to Maureen Starkey and George Harrison’s affair.
Well, what does Leon think of Madame Bovary? He seems a bit like an Emma.
This is the first time anyone has asked about Leon in FOREVER. That being said, he wasn't in the latest update, so it's not on anyone but me.
Where Madame Bovary is concerned, I hoped the connection between that and Leon's character wasn't glaring. As no one has ever asked about the parallels, I'm assuming it successfully hasn't been. Either way, they're intentional and I'll explain them now:
In Madame Bovary, there is a character called Léon that Emma Bovary happens upon moving to a new town. They bond over their shared love of escapism through romantic novels. Eventually, he ups and moves to Paris.
Leon isn't a carbon copy of the Léon in Madame Bovary, but the groundwork is vaguely there. The Leon that MC meets on the QE2 is the evolved, baroque and debonair version of Léon that Emma meets upon his return from Paris.
Whereas for Emma this evolves into an affair, for MC it evolves into a kind of menteeship. Emma's life is confined to love and sex as currency. For MC, I didn't want that to be the same; I wanted her career ambitions to overrule and be the driving force of her dynamic with Leon. She has moved to an entirely new continent; I wanted her to find and undergo the same cultural evolution that Léon in Madame Bovary has and experiences--rather than her just being an Emma.
Even the option for French!MC to loan the book to Leon is due to an implication of the cultural capital she may already have as a product of being privately educated and from a middle class background.
ANYHOW, as for what Leon thought of the book: he loves the bleakness and the Frenchness of the novel; the flawed, messiness of who Emma is allowed to be; and what the book is largely saying about the confines of society for women and sexuality.
(Sorry this is so long. I bet you didn’t expect a full-blown essay from one simple question.)
would a in-universe twitter fanwar happen between vince and leon stans
sort of! this is going to be ultra specific, but i feel like it'd be a twt fanwar between vince's solo fans vs voyeurs fans in general. vince's style and good looks would fit into the mainstream more and be hardcore nostalgia bait in a coquette romanticised way (a string of words that genuinely made me feel itchy for typing, god). think how people talk about jim morrison and james dean scratch that, a better point of reference for this in general is harry styles vs one direction fans
voyeurs fans would describe léon as underrated etc in this day and age; he's the kind of classic musician where they're referred to as 'niche' even though millions of people still know who they are and consider them a cultural icon
we know that Shiloh has had a revolving door of girlfriends over the two years before the start of the game, but have Vince and Leon had anything resembling relationships? or just hook ups?
This is coming up in later chapters so I won’t speak on it too much but… they’re all man-whores is the long and short of it. Yes, even Vince.
Shiloh is the only one that actually commits (sorta kinda lol)
wait omg is the draft part of the vince vs léon drama??? cuz i know léon and vince’s political views (? for lack of better word since i know they have basically some of the same ideas, just different ways of showing it) are highlighted in many chapters/scenes…does vince’s “willingness” to fight bother léon? does léon’s disagreement bother vince since, as mentioned, léon is sort of privileged due to his wealthier upbringing versus vince, who grew up in a large immigrant household, making ends meet at a family-owned restaurant? pieces r clicking and i feel like they shouldve a while ago..but!!!
someones thoughts i thought i'd share (i'm just going to send a bunch of stream of consciousness i've received because i feel like i'm holding it all hostage. not all at once though, i dont want to flood your feeds lol)
