the sound of silence (leonhardt-san)

In light of recent events, the dull noise that flared in the dining hall was comforting as a soft blanket of sound that soothed her agitation. Each step had become a burden of sorts and each time her muscles stretched, she could feel the fire beneath her skin. The first day on the 3D Maneuvering gear hadn't been kind to her and the bruises she was sure to have tomorrow could agree. Her softened aching reminded her of how far she was from being the best here. There were girls like Mikasa Ackerman and boys like Reiner Braun that were so talented she thought she might not even make it into the military at all.

Mina slid her scratched, plastic tray up to the window of the kitchen to get her standard chunk of staled bread and soup that was so thin it might as well be water before she turned to look at the scattered tables. There was, as always, Thomas and Millius and Nack that smiled and waved her over, laughing out loud and making jokes to each other that seemed to shake the entire building. Mina smiled and returned the gesture, but the exertion of all that socializing looked tiring.

It only took a quick scan of the room to find an empty (or almost empty) table near the back corner. A slight girl with hair the color of hay and shadows that covered half her face picked at her food idly, seemingly unaware of everyone else around her.

To most, the sight would scream to keep away, but to her the emptiness looked relaxing. There was no exhaustion in staying quiet and eating alone.

Mina moved to the table and set her tray down gently, sliding into the seat across from the girl she remembered as one of the more talented trainees. Quiet, but deadly. Without a word, she tore away a piece of bread and popped into her mouth, smiling without meaning to.
