Like not to be an ass about this or to sound selfish but “eventually” really, really is not a good enough answer. Just as another example how the hell are we going to do the election in November if the sort of long tight lines that form at busy polling places are the precise sort of thing we’re trying to avoid?

1) the rest of the world exists. For all I know Anon is from another region severely hit by the disease, like Spain or Italy. Amazingly these people have better things to do right now than worry about US elections.

3) What do you expect me to do here? Look into my crystal ball and pull a date from the depths of it? Considering the fact that this is a rapidly developping pandemic, it would be absolutely foolish to say when measures can or will be relaxed. It depends on things like when a treatment/vaccine becomes available, which i can very much not predict. Issuing a ‘when’ in the current framework is so damn unscientific it’s essentially criminal. Especially since I fully expect that ‘when’ to be highly variable locally, depending on ALSO a number of things, like hospital capacities.

Fun fact you get more radiation exposure from sleeping next to another person every night than the average person outside the exclusion zone gets from Chernobyl in a year. Hell, if you eat a banana daily you get more from them. Even the exclusion zone itself is safe enough that people can (and do) take tours of it and just wash dust off their shoes after. Duration is a very important factor in most exposure cases; something that'd harm you over the course of years is often fine for a few hours.

I mean, I won’t because apparently that’s “invasive” and “illegal” and “nobody wants your germs Jessica.” Anyway, you’ve basically said what I have been trying to say but in a much more eloquent and coherent way than I managed haha. I watched Chernobyl and when I went to look up the reactions from critics and social media I was shocked to see this wave of anti-nuclear sentiment because the show either implies or in some cases outright states a lot of stuff that’s total bollocks. You don’t get radiation poisoning from sitting in a room with someone who has it the way the show suggested. Radiation exposure for the vast majority of people will not cause significant harm. Like I grew up in a city with higher background radiation than Fukushima and it hasn’t caused any health crisis. And as much as any avoidable deaths are bad, severe obesity cuts your life expectancy more than being 1.5km from a nuclear bomb and many people would have had these issues anyway (like the miners in the show; a miner in the 1980s almost definitely would have got cancer from his job anyway so while that doesn’t make it ok it makes it very difficult to demonstrate a causal link). The show assumes a degree of intelligence in the audience - that they’ll research and understand that we are all exposed to radiation and it isn’t going to kill everyone, it can be controlled and used for worthwhile purposes like cancer treatment, there are different forms of radiation and different methods of exposure- but assuming intelligence in the general public is usually a mistake. You had people freaking out recently when there was a fire in Chernobyl because they assumed - as the show suggests - that something like that could wipe out everyone in Europe. It won’t. Basically respect that it’s a powerful force that absolutely can kill but don’t create fear and panic unnecessarily. The displacement of people and the economic cost, as well as the fear and hostility it creates towards people from these areas, is a more immediate risk in my view 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also my friend went to Chernobyl during his holidays a couple of years back. I remember being so surprised because the way it’s portrayed in the media it’s like you can’t set foot there for 278 million years. I thought he was joking haha

Could someone please explain what the safe third country agreement is and what would be affected by suspending it?

Under  the Safe Third Country Agreement, in effect since December 2004, Canada and the US each declare the other country safe for refugees and close the door on most refugee claimants at the US-Canada border.

The Canadian Council for Refugees strenuously opposes the Agreement, because the US is not a safe country for all refugees. The CCR also denounces the purpose and effect of reducing the number of refugees who can seek Canada’s protection.

The CCR continues to call on the Canadian government to withdraw from the Safe Third Country Agreement. The CCR participated in a legal challenge of the designation of the US as a safe third country shortly after it came into effect, and is engaged in a new legal challenge, launched in July 2017 (see below).

If Canada suspended the safe third country agreement, U.S. Refugees could apply for asylum directly at the US-Canada border. Due to this agreement refugees must cross the US-Canada border irregularly, often putting themselves at great risk. A number of refugees got frost bite by travelling through a forest in the middle of winter to reach Canada.

I have to ask, re the fandom laws: in the gymnastics fandom, around the Olympics, we get a lot of new fans coming in writing fic (which is not normally something that happens in this fandom). And this fic is of course sexually suggestive or explicit RPF, and it's typically with gymnasts who are underage or barely legal because most gymnasts are underage or barely legal. It's also usually f/f when the vast majority of these athletes have never indicated they're into girls, and some are from...

... places like Russia where even though it is fiction, something like this might be used as an excuse to harm them if it was discovered. So my question is, where exactly should the line between "moral objections" and "this is harassment and it is wrong" lie for this fandom? We tend to take the attitude that it's all inappropriate and drive off the writers who try, but a lot of them have thrown one or more of the three laws back at us as they leave... is it a legit defense?
