We are incredibly saddened today to hear of the passing of HistoryMaker #LeroneBennettJr As an editor of Ebony and Jet and the author of black history, Bennett played a vital role in documenting black life. Starting at Jet in 1951, Bennett moved to the sister publication Ebony by 1953 and became executive editor just five years later. He moved into historical writing at HistoryMaker John H. Johnson’s suggestion and began a regular series of articles on black history that later became his most famous work, “Before the Mayflower.” Over his career, Bennett helped Johnson define the Ebony voice and helped establish the magazine for what it became. Johnson himself said this about Bennett: “What I can say is that I know a lot of writers who can write. I know a lot of speakers who can speak. But I don't know but one who can write and speak well, and that's Lerone Bennett." He was a mentor and inspiration for many others within our archive and his legacy will carry on for years to come.
