THROW BACK THURSDAY: GENE ANTHONY RAY

Today, we pay homage to our Native Son, the late Gene Anthony Ray. He was the iconic and charismatic actor, dancer and choreographer who starred as Leroy Johnson in the 1980 film Fame and later on the TV series of the same name from 1982 to 1987. Ray’s presence on Fame let us see someone who looked like us. He was bold, audacious, talented and vulnerable. His muscular body and thick cornrows showed us that we could be and love ourselves because we saw ourselves in Leroy. He was a star, a renegade, a maverick and Black man who gave us life by living his own. His legend lives on. 

This is one of the many reasons I love Native Son! To have a platform where we can remember and celebrate the legendary Ray gives me great joy! I remember being so inspired seeing Leroy because he looked like me -- and he was a young Black man who was creative, audacious, and self possessed. When I was in high school, he was part of a pop culture moment that helped shape my artistic identity, sense of self and confidence in being different. He possessed his Black Man Magic with verve.
