This book changed what I expect out of sapphic fiction from this point forward. One of my FAVORITE reads of this year. 10 out of 5 stars that’s how much I loved this shit. I cannot wait to read Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail this fall!

Side note: I asked AHB whether Delilah was meant to evoke Kate Siegel, and she said yes!

Aether Chapter 1

I'm still partially riding the high of everything that was BotB and so starting this book off with a disabled main character dealing with chronic pain, lesphobia, the agony of being a gay girl in love with their straight best friend WHO KNOWS AND VERY GENTLY TURNED THEM DOWN AGES AGO, and depression.

Maggie is a little bit fucked up in a way I find charming for my superhero protagonists.

It's good. It's so good, Maggie promises to be an interesting character to follow and has some interesting characters currently surrounding her. It's just the fucking whiplash, going from classic fantasy vibes with the cutest little dragon companion ever, to modern woes of a PTSD ridden post doc.

As far as the other characters go.

I hope Garrett gets bitchslapped off a skyscrapper by a dragon.

Sierra rings an alarm. I'm trying to figure out which one. It may be several. She does seem nice. She's clearly been there for Maggie through some rough times and put a lot of effort into establishing and then maintaining their relationship even after she found out about Maggie's feelings for her and admitted she couldn't return them. It is 100% possible that the alarm ringing is just the fact that she convinced Maggie to be her first human test subject quickly before the ethics board could be arm twisted into changing their mind by her grant competitor, and this is gonna be how Maggie ends up with superpowers. Anyone who knows the genre or had read the blurb for Aether KNOWS this is gonna be lab accident power acquisition.

Jamal is my favourite non Maggie character. He made Garrett fuck off, and he pointed out that Maggie deserves to and should fight for herself without worrying that it might inconvenience a friend who doesn't appear to worry overmuch about inconveniencing her.

Also, hello again Digilife. Twice voted "Superhero-To-Be's favoured method of the escaping societal and psychological constraints of their physical bodies at the risk of their own sense of self worth."

It's cool that its been in two stories now because honestly why the fuck would it not be? You don't bring up a virtual world that rich and then only have it mentioned that one time as the old vice of 1 (one) character in an interconnected universe. That'd be a waste of resources.
