Good things I can say about Les Mis 2000 right before the barricade sequence goes off the rails and plunges into the Seine, setting the river on fire:
- there are actually some good costumes; Marius and most of the Amis, Cosette getting her black dress, etc
-...setting aside the fact that this Gavroche is inexplicably and demonstrably immortal, he’s a very good Gavroche
-Bahorel exists! he even gets some lines! How did I forget? Because none of them are his own lines, because this is a terrible adaptation and hardly anyone gets their original lines or role, nor would they make sense in this new show, but there are lines! He is also immortal, which is of course just how it is
-Of all adaptations, I think this is the one with the best barricade just as a structure, I mean it has the steps and everything! it’s REALLY GOOD, this thing is a fortification!
Other things That Sure Are Happening that i didn’t even manage to remember in my shock from last time:
-Javert arms Marius knowing that Marius is part of a revolutionary cell. He says this at the time. Just. giving guns to a dedicated insurrectionist. Javert, folks!
- Javert tells Marius to make babies with Cosette. Because of the Emperor. They. They have a whole conversation where Javert tells Marius to get bangin’. Plotwise, this is so Marius can tell Javert Cosette’s name. (why does Javert need Cosette’s name? well, you see, this adaptation is Very Bad.)
-this is right after Javert arrests the law school if you’re wondering where it is on your copy bc everything is very hard to remember in this
- Javert writes down the names of everyone at the barricade (plausible , would take some work), their addresses (...what) and the women they’re sleeping with (???)

Javert is from WHAT now?
sorry , I misspoke:
How COULD I get his Tragic Backstory wrong:
You know nothing of Javert, he was born in...to a wealthy family of landowning bounty hunters...
He was a...victim of..scum like you...
he watched his nemesis die in prison labor tooooooo
I can’t believe I’m watching Les Mis 2000 again I can’t believe it’s somehow even worse than I remembered

I can't help but think of that trope where Madeleine had ladies trying to get with him in M-sur-M and Javert's like "ugh" about it... Meanwhile 2000 fanfic Javert would be the one matchmaking..... "But Monsieur, the strength of your loins.....imagine how stacked your sons would be.......why do you not Donate your gene pool to France........."
...now I am hearing this in his creepy whispery voice and it is UPSETTING o__0
see just my personal IMHO, here, but “ someone ambiguously resulted in my family losing our wealth, which we used to persecute people declared criminals under the ancien regime, so now I get off on watching people abused to death” is just
just lacking something in the way of Sympathetic Backstory
but hey what do I know? I once expected Gavroche to age like a human child, I’m a Fool

I Do Not Care For the choices made here I want more Javert and Marius interaction, but. Not like that.
..you know, overall--if there is any “overall” to 2000, it always feels wildly disconnected from itself--I almost feel like the series was trying to set up a Javert-Marius relationship that sort of echoed Valjean-Cosette-- a younger person with an adult who is Weirdly Interested in them, controlling, trying to get the younger person to see what they (incorrectly) consider the Real Stakes
which would be?? a very a bizarre role for a Javert , especially one who knows that Marius is a revolutionary! But it would be...something
they interact SO much in this series! I would like to Believe that someone, somewhere , at SOME point, had a concept for it beyond “yeah lol 24601 Blaze It “

I'm Marius's vaguely appalled and confused expression
if context helps, the context is that Javert just arrested the law school, where he has been posing as a student, 21 Jump Street Style! I mean, it doesn’t help me, but it might theoretically help you!
