Les Mis Translation Comparison Project

Hey all, I've put together an editable spreadsheet that I'm hoping people will add to this year as we read along with @lesmisletters!

The idea is to track any notable Les Mis version comparisons or discrepancies. So far I've included spaces for 3 different web-accessible French editions I know of, as well as all the major English translations. Please feel free to add more columns for other versions or translations in other languages!

I'm hoping that at the end we'll have a handy spreadsheet that can be used as a resource for those looking to compare areas of the text across versions/translations including notable lines, puns, errors, or discrepancies.

MISC Les Mis thoughts

Thoughts on earl carpenter version of stars 25th anniversary on youtube

Overall very minimalist which I liked see also my dislike of current west end staging flinging arms out all the time. Could probably have looked up a bit more although overall I really liked how static yet also twitchy it was. Obligatory turn around/kneel/arms out when mentioning the lord, albeit didn't cross himself. Felt quite perfunctory which I agree with overall I think it makes more sense than sudden heartfelt religious emotion idk. I will say one disadvantage that I hadn't thought of was arms holding hat and truncheon quite awkwardly limp at some points albeit I did like gesturing w the truncheon. I guess obligatory to take hat off during stars due to (?) face acting? Risk of it falling off when looking up?

I had a feeling this existed somewhere.  There was, in fact, a Yiddish theater adaptation of Les Mis performed in Warsaw in the 20s (VYKT=Warsaw Yiddish Art Theater). There are often silent film versions of these performances, so who knows, maybe there’s one of those kicking around in an archive somewhere too!

I bet it would be EPIC - like, if you think the musical is Dramatic, it would look staid compared to these kinds of performances.

(Not to mention the idea of a dramatization of Notre Dame de Paris - the mind boggles.)
