In the 1st century BCE, two women, Fonteia Eleusis and Fonteia Helena, memorialised their relationship on their grave relief, where they are depicted clasping their right hands, a traditional Roman symbol of marriage.

In southern China in the 19th and early 20th centuries, women formed Golden Orchid Societies, communities who chose not to marry, or not to live with their husbands, and instead supported each other socially and financially.

When Sofya Parnok, the poet known as Russia’s Sappho, passed away in 1933, she was surrounded by three of the women she loved: her partners Olga Tsuberbiller, Lyudmila Erarskaya, and Nina Vedeneyeva.
In 1930s Detroit, Ruth Ellis and her partner Babe Franklin’s home was a centre for queer Black life and a place for young queer people to stay. Ruth and Babe even supported some young queer people through college, helping them pay for books, food, and tuition.
In 1957, Japanese author Yoshiya Nobuko (left) legally adopted her partner, Monma Chiyo, because, as she explained “.. the law will not recognize you as a wife…” adding “I aim to get the law reformed.”
