Frozy-Lesserpop
Frozy are a three-piece band hailing from Seaford (though currently scattered across the globe), who have been quietly releasing albums since 2011, with little or no fanfare, the bands fourth album Lesserpop is the first to be released on limited edition vinyl (250) as well as the usual digital formats and as such, should help raise the band's profile. The band themselves condense lo-fi pop and effortless indie intro sub three minute (actually there's a couple of tracks on the thirteen track affair that breach the three minute mark but lets not split hairs) harmony enhanced, simplistic, jangly sing-a-long's that hook the listener in and demand repeat spins. The album kicks off with Ferris Wheel, a brief, but beautiful pop song dreamily drawled by frontman Nicol ably backed by the cooing harmonies of Irina and Rhiannon over a combination of 60's ish jangly guitar strums and basic beat keeping, bringing to mind the more hushed tones of the Postcard record label. The lyrics are like a mantra, repetitive, yet somehow intoxicating and by the time the one minute forty second track has played out, you're happily chanting along, caught up in the band's addictive spell. The second track, Angela maybe double in length and there's a fuzzy guitar added to the mix, but the vibe is very much the same, easy laodback vocal drawls, catchy hook-laden chorus and those essential boy/girl harmonies that add a delicious sun-kissed flavouring to the bands effortless pop styling. Individual highlights are hard to pick as the entire album is such a joy, but I love the vision of Cardinals, as Nicol softly sings of sitting on the roof barely speaking watching ducks flying overhead, Summers End is a gorgeous instrumental (one of three) with it's twanging guitars and shuffling drums some how creating visions of the summer sun setting and drawing in those days of autumn, whilst the hushed vocal refrain of the album's closing number 13 Snow is a wonderfully delicate, yet infectious pay-off. Lesserpop is one of those lovely, understated affairs to simply listen and savour, there's no over the top flourishes or under wanted theatrics, it's just a collection of shimmering, dreampop full of harmonic hooks and subtle twangs. www.oddboxrecords.com
