My New Life
Professor, I can’t get water to boil.”
“ Hmm, try to imagine the water in a vessel, like a bath.” This was what I learned from Knight when I went to Vane Magic Academy to teach during an immersion programme.
I graduated roughly 20 years ago. When I first graduated, I was offered a job by the headmaster. I’ve been teaching ever since then. The princes too, have graduated and gone back to their kingdoms. They are all ruling now. The last one to ascend the throne was Lance, who argued fiercely with his father about ruling. Ira is a much better place now, I can attest to that.
Today marks the 18th anniversary since I came to Saligia. I walk up the stairs to the headmaster’s tower. Every year since I became a professor, I come to his tower and we celebrate and reminisce.
“ Hello, Headmaster.” I say, knocking and pushing the door open. I’m greeted by the sight of a cake on the desk and smiles from the headmaster, Christoph, Nix and Phinny. Yes, Chris. He entered the academy and was taught by me. Like me, after he graduated, he was offered a job of being the headmaster’s assistant. He helps with paperwork, errands and occasionally visits the kingdoms when important messages need to be delivered to the kings.
We cut cake, laugh and joke around. I’ve never regretted not going back to Earth, even though I have enough power and have mastered the ability to do so. “ Sophia, as you know, the new school term is coming up in 3 weeks. The island will be under maintenance and the students will be returning to their kingdoms. You and Christoph, of course, may remain here if you wish to do so.”
“ Alright then,I’ll stay here. I’ve already seen everything I wanted to see in Saligia. Is there anything else?”
“ Yes, actually. It’s good news I think you’ll find.” The headmaster pauses and passes me a stack of forms and letters.
“ The… kings and heirs… are coming to Colde in a week?” I can’t believe it.
“ Yes, along with the queens and perhaps some of their siblings.”
“ You mean… like Idina and Zev. Sherry’s coming too, right?” It’s been so long since I’ve seen them. Sure, maybe at their coronations and some celebrations, but we have never seen each other face to face.
“ There’s one more thing.”
“What is it?”
“The kings have all requested that you personally teach the heirs. More specifically, ancient magic.All the princes are able to use it. They are aware that you are teaching. If you do agree, you will receive a higher pay and be relieved of all your current teaching duties. They have provided books and some materials on Ancient Magic as well.”
My jaw dropped. “ ME, teach their kids?!”
The headmaster smiles gently. “ They have said that they have full confidence in you. And you have mine as well.”
