when celeste’s parents came together, to call them an odd match would be an understatement: her mother, a wildlife and nature photographer, advocating for endangered species, and her father, a wealthy collector of old hollywood antiques. did they have much in common ? not really, despite the fact they were both fascinatingly bizarre.
at one point, celeste was the glue holding their marriage together. her mother was ... a free spirit, to say the least. nowadays only drinking mimosas and reminiscing on all her glory years during the 70′s and the 80′s that celeste grew up hearing. and she never left any details out, every affair, every high, her mother was liberal to the max when it came to raising celeste, and it’s no wonder she turned out to be so much like her. the good, and the bad.
when in the midst of a fight, celeste’s mother simply admitted that celeste’s father wasn’t actually her dad, he didn’t think twice when he kicked them out. the divorce process was messy, to say the least. her mother resold every gift and designer caftan, gaining enough money to live out comfortably in the outskirts of la, celeste was only 12.
the day celeste turned 18, she decided she’d venture off into the world herself. it was her mother’s idea to live in a van and just travel, much like she once did. celeste loved it a little too much.
starting in la, she took route 66 all the way to chicago, counting each penny along the way.
this wasn’t exactly one of those figuring yourself out type of trips, not really, it was more of the let’s make as many memories and stupid decisions as we can sort, and she hasn’t seemed to let go of that mentality just yet.
out of all the places she’d seen, it was like the photographs just didn’t do them any justice ( that, or she doesn’t really know much about getting a camera to work properly. ) painting was just a hobby, something to clear her mind, one of the many lessons her mother insisted she’d take, but it was here that it grew into a passion, so she enrolled into university for a fine arts degree, thirsty for knowledge for her new craft.
for her graduation, she invited both of her parents. when her dad failed to show up, she was surprised to find out it wasn’t out of spite, but due to the fact he wasn’t getting any younger, and his health issues were starting to get to him.
first thing she did was get on a plane, and it was like he was waiting for her arrival. she sat at his bedside, accepted all of his apologies, and said her goodbyes. he passed away while she held his hand, tears clouding her eyes.
to this day, celeste still isn’t exactly sure who her dad actually is, and she doesn’t really care to know, either.
you’d think there’d be some big inheritance, but not really. turns out her parents were pretty shady with their money, most of it was used to pay out huge debts. the little they had left, she used to pay off her student loans, and kick-start her art career.
she started gaining instagram followers with her van life shenanigans, and it was easy to transform her online presence into income, selling prints and taking commissions.
along the road, despite all the places she’d seen, none felt like somewhere she’d call home. on a business trip, she had to visit nyc and fell in love. she moved into astoria, and now works at an art studio she rents.
