Systems of oppression aim at the dehumanizing those defined as marginal. Those defined as marginal are subject to forms of exclusion due to being placed under the mark of difference. These differences upon which exclusion are based, are often constructed in a binary of opposites-us/them, native/non-native, civilized/uncivilized made possible by the accumulation of power, privilege, cultural/social/economic capital that are passed on from one generation to the next, and thus, creating a mirage of order. Social exclusion, then, plays itself out through hegemonic struggles.
