MASKS have been known to hold power when created. Each design created in the image of the dead. Most of the time, it is done in memorial, something of a sacred practice. And yet with time, the practice has faded into the abyss of many's memories. While this is true for the majority of humanity, a family still uses it heavily. However, in addition to the sacred making of masks when someone passes, this family has found a way to trap demons within the wood of masks. There is only one family that seems to still use this practice, yet has used it sparingly, and only as a measure of defense. For with time, it has been discovered that angels may also be trapped within the wooden confines. Even with their lack of prominence in society, the family has still been known to be a highly proficient way of hunting demons. ...the youngest of this family was born with exceptional talent in the ways of not only carving masks, bit trapping those who are unholy...and holy.
Mian Ju, barely a child, was attacked in the midst of the night by a demon. An attempt to take away the family of it's final born child. At the time, an angel was on hot pursuit of this demon and when it attempted to kill the feral demon, it left a young Mian Ju in the cross hairs. Unable to decipher which was demon and which angel--or whether or not there was even something holy in her presence--and with the idea of how to trap the supernatural, she decided in a fit of inspiration to trap both. Leaving the night silent, with only she and two masks below her feet.
Rather than speaking of what happened, she instead decided to hide both masks. The punishment for trapping an angel can be as extreme as death. She kept the masks a secret, or rather decided to always have them both of her, wearing one of the two masks of all times, while keeping the other at her side. When asked about these masks, she says they hold two great demons that tried to kill her--they are a signifier of her power and how she shouldn’t be taken lightly despite being but a child.
And a child she still is, Mian Ju at age 16 has left her family home to continue the art of demon trapping while also wishing to learn, to explore. Though she is not a direct enemy of the gods, if it was ever discovered that she had trapped an angel, it could be detrimental. And even more so when one realizes she likely has trapped more than one, and continues on. As due to her youth and often unhinged state of thought, she has accidentally trapped more than what she should be. She is unable to sense the difference between that of sin and that which is holy.
