Ramblings on Infinite Warfare

While I do realize there probably aren't that many avid fans of the Call of Duty franchise on tumblr, I'm sure everyone sees ads. Recently, an advertisement has been playing to the tune of Infinity Wards’s latest installment in the omnipresent cod franchise. From what I gathered from the clip, the story is that of a Martian insurrection, and you play as a supposedly ragtag and supposedly underdog squad fighting for Earth.

The primary antagonist is the leader of the Martian insurrection, played by the absolutely captivating Kit Harington of GOT fame. He is painted to be some kind of terrorist, with his striking complexion and intense dialogue intercut with scenes of violence and seemingly unprovoked destruction.

My problem with this game is this: Martian freedom fighters are the enemy. We have to defend earth and blah blah blah and it's always called an insurrection. Does nobody stop to think that Mars doesn't belong to Earth? That the people who choose to live on Mars are not a part of some Earth based empire because of their 42 chromosomes. The actions that appear to have been taken by the rebels do seem extreme, but the game doesn't seem to care about whether it was justified.

Full disclosure, I think that the Martian rebels are trying to fight for their freedom, and if this were a real life situation I'd be with them. This is of course not really a problem yet, we struggle enough trying to unify the Earth, we're not even close to having enough coordination and centralization to control a planet. But when the human race blossoms to their potential as a multi planetary species, I will be raising my voice in defense of those who want to live free of Earther control.
