Sunday steeze... As a lefty, I had to teach myself from scratch how to build letters in this calligraphic style. Being a lefty and doing and type of calligraphy comes with a pretty big disadvantage. Righty’s typically start at the top of the letter, naturally pulling the strike left to right, as we typically do when we write, ending with the serif. As a lefty however, I have to build my letters completely backwards, starting at the BOTTOM of the letter, beginning with the serif, then pulling the stoke backwards, from right to left, finishing at the top of the letter. Most wouldn’t pick up on this at all, but it took me years to get to a point where I can do it rather effortlessly. Keep in mind however, I’m not following ANY of the traditional rules of calligraphy, not did I ever care to, and do not consider myself a “calligrapher” in any way. That being said, while the stroke is still calligraphic in nature, it has the spontaneity and free flowing looseness of a graffiti handstyle, which I love to no end. It’s a perfect blend of both worlds with endless possibilities. Okay, lefty calligraffiti lesson complete for today.
