First Composition I Class of the Semester!
Today, Tuesday August 29th, 2017 I had my first official Dance composition class here at Anderson University. For those of you who do not know, dance composition is a class where we learn different techniques to develop new choreography. I am very excited to learn how to incorporate the four “basic elements of dance: shape, space, time, and energy (or effort)” into my choreography to make it more dynamic and interesting to watch (Bain).
In class we discussed what we like and dislike when we view other people’s choreography and how we can use and avoid them in our own work. It is amazing how often choreographers end up making choreographic decisions in their own work that would drive them crazy in other people’s work.
Each person in the class also shared what they looking forward to in the class, what makes them nervous, and what they fear. Creating choreography is a very personal experience. Through it one can express deep personal parts of their lives and themselves. Sharing this experience and part of one’s self with your peers, let alone the general public, can be a very difficult thing. It is always relieving to hear that you are not the only one in the room with fears of others judging your personal work.
The last thing we discussed in class was our personal goals. These goals are what we want to learn and develop over the course of the semester. We also discussed general materials we want to take away from being apart of the School of Dance.
You can read all of my personal answers to the questions in the picture below. Hopefully it will show you a little bit more about who I am as a person and most importantly, a dancer. If you cannot tell from my answers to what I like to watch, I come from a very classical background, so I am hoping to take that knowledge and apply it to my choreography. I am also excited to learn how to push my boundaries stylistically in this class.
