eliot really had to stand there and stare down moreau and talk like a professional as if his best friend in the whole world wasn’t drowning a few feet behind him
Hardison really said: “Personal space? I do not know her!”
“We’ve been chasing Moreau for six months, and you didn’t tell us.” “Because I was trying -” “Because what?” “- to figure out a way around this, all right? Maybe take my shot before -” “Cause your protecting him, is that what you’re -” “I’m protecting you! Last time I checked that was my job.”
For all that Eliot doesn’t con the team, they’re still pissed at him for not coming clean because he’s been lying by omission. And Eliot knows this, so he takes their anger except when it’s from Nate, because Nate tries to accuse him of double-crossing the team for Moreau. There’s nothing further from the truth; Eliot would rather lose his favorite punching arm.
Nate’s job is to see all the angles, to see all the different ways this chess game could fall apart or be won. Nate considering that Eliot might double-cross them isn’t what hurts - Nate considers that possibility for all of them. Nate outright accusing Eliot of that is what gets Eliot to go from steady and controlled to raising his voice.
And it’s one more nail in the coffin, one more brick in the wall between Nate and Eliot. It’s only in season 4 that we really see the effects though. When Nate is practicing his shooting, planning to kill Dubenich and Latimer, Eliot warns Nate about revenge. Opens up to him a little bit. But what he doesn’t do is volunteer to take them down for Nate. It’s not that Nate lost the right to ask that of Eliot - it’s that Nate never earned it.
