The first time that Riku spots someone slightly reminiscent of Sora peeking from a crowd, there and gone again, he’s convinced he’d imagined it. Every time he loses Sora at any point in his life he swears he can sense his presence where it isn’t remotely near, and this time is no exception to the last.

It’s almost haunting just how strongly his intuition screams at him to just look for his friend, however. There’s something in their connection that pushes and pulls, tugging at... well, tugging at his heart. And this confuses him in a way that it never has before. Normally, he wouldn’t be so quick to question it — there were extenuating circumstances, some of the inhuman and dream-eating kind, that made it possible for him to literally sense his presence before — but...

In no uncertain terms, Riku had left the world so that Sora could continue on.

... So he has to be imagining this.

The idle way Riku’s gone about his life in the past couple of days has been nothing if not uneventful, despite the wide expanse of a new world ⁠— one he’s unable to leave, no less ⁠— stretching out before him. He thinks it’s fine, really, it’s a change of pace and he may be restless, he may be plagued with anxieties and uncertainties and worries, but... it’s... okay. These thoughts pitter through his mind as he weaves through a crowd, almost trapped in his own mind, resigned to his emotions and ⁠—

The tension building in his mind as his thoughts continue breaks unceremoniously in an all too sudden SNAP and Riku’s head swivels to find the source of what broke him from his thoughts. And as if compelled, he’s pushing through the crowd back the way he came, apologizing profusely to passersby but barely paying attention to his own steps, because... that was Sora’s voice, wasn’t it? He wasn’t talking to Riku, but the sound was too familiar, too easy to pinpoint in a crowd, the lilting playfulness and underlying excitement all too familiar to him.

“Sora ⁠— !!”

Gods be damned if this was a mirage, but Riku’s voice carries over the crowd regardless.

"— Another fixation? Really?"

The quiet voice of Strelitzia's Chirithy pipes up beside her ear, the dream eater tucked comfortably against the crook of her neck and draped over her shoulder. She sits atop a railing overlooking a walkway, rather inconveniently accessible by scaling a small portion of a building and shimmying across a very narrow ledge... but it's out of sight from the naked eye, just good enough and uniquely her own.

When their words register in her distracted state, Strelitzia's eyes widen and she turns her head abruptly to look at the Chirithy, face turning nearly as red as the bow in her hair. "It's not like that!" she whispers back, voice coming out higher than intended. She turns her gaze back to the street, lingering on a boy as he walks — and she lets out a sigh, lowering her head and shaking it. "It's just — it's the same as before. It's- it's not a fixation, I just..."

"You want to be his friend?"

"I—" She covers her face. "I can sense something about him. A... a warmth. A light. I saw him before, a few times, crossing paths in different wards. It's weird, you wouldn't expect that in a world as big as this, and — and I know he doesn't notice me, but I — HEY!"

Nearly stumbling from the railing out of surprise, she realizes that her Chirithy has left her, having jumped from the ledge to follow the boy — and she's soon to follow, jumping down without regard, on their tail in mere moments... but by the time she's reached them, they've already caught the boy's attention, and her anxiety hits her like a brick.

"I — I'm sorry for them!!" She scoops up the Chirithy into her arms, giving them an almost reprimanding look. "They, um, they must have mistaken you for someone else, or something..."

... She trails off, uncertain, eyes falling to her feet.

each time he happened to come across sora, the pair of them stood worlds apart in both beliefs and strength. there had been a time when sora possessed far more power than he, with sephiroth at the mercy of the spiralian curse, as he had decided to call it. a period of weakness which sephiroth could barely remember now, a year on from his return of greatness.

there was strife between them further than simply that which transpired from past meetings, a mutual friend which connected them. this of course was zack fair. but zack was absent from the meeting of those two once again, a springtime eve where the trees lining the archimedes streets were just beginning to tease the slight colour of incoming buds.

“ still here, are you? “ rhetorical, obviously. the setting sun cast their shadows longer against the pale marble of the walkway, crowding the path despite the pair of them being the only two figures meeting there. perhaps sora had simply spotted him and wandered close enough for sephiroth to notice, or merely it was fate intervening. he didn’t mind. sora was no trouble, not at the moment.

his voice lacked the previous foreboding weight, instead a rather flat and apathetic tone took to his words as he regarded the other with interest more so than some cruel amusement. “ so many come and go, yet you always remain behind. hm. “ he could have made some comment, something to drive the boy’s heels into the dirt and have him burn a scowl up at him, but instead sephiroth simply carried on in the same half-bored tone.

“ i wonder, do you imagine that you will be here forever? “

A small child huddled up in some dark alleyway, hugging his knees. Usually a child like that would be waiting for a hero to save them, but Tenko had given up on heroes a long time ago. When he finally saw someone he screamed.

“Don’t go near me, you’ll die.”

He was bitter hat no one came to save him. He was afraid that everyone hated him now. He was wounded, it felt like a tear had been ripped in his chest and it was still bleeding, and all he could do was pick, and pick, and pick at the wound. He was an unpleasant and ugly child, but he was also kind.

“I’ll k-kill you if you don’t go away.”

Tenko didn’t tell a very convincing lie. He was so young he hadn’t even learned to lie yet. He itched at the scar on his eyelid, and then opened his eyes raising his head ever so slightly.

“Your outfit looks stupid. They really let you be a hero wearing that?”

Tenko said. He was a brat even at that age.

He had slept most of the day. Curling in on himself, too exhausted to change out of his clothing as he hugged himself, Buster Sword looming over him from its place of rest. Eventually, he had to leave that apartment, waking at sundown and feeling stifled. So he found himself at Savior’s Respite, the cool late-winter breeze bustling his mess of hair in the breeze.

The Buster Sword was set down with a chunk into the dirt as he sat next to it, leaning slightly against its blunt end. His eyes were red-rimmed and sunken, and he looked deflated. Would it be inappropriate to just stand at the ledge and shout? Just shout as loud as he could, for as long as he wanted to.

Man, when did he start caring about being appropriate? Standing, he walked over to the ledge, took in a deep breath, and just shouted into the abyss, just one long yell that echoed all around and back at him. Anyone nearby would hear it, and he just shouted until he couldn’t anymore.

Satisfied, he listened until his voice stopped echoing.

At least he was alone-

“Oh, uh...” This kid waaas...Sora, right? “Thought nobody was here. Sorry.”

[ ♒︎ ] -- Destiny was a curious thing.

No matter the world, once two hearts were linked, they could never be severed. To think that all those years ago, events were set in motion that would see their paths cross this many times... For all her experience Aqua could not have foreseen it, especially not under these circumstances. But she knew better than to believe it were by chance.

Shock buzzed like a current in her skull upon catching sight of brown locks, pointing in all directions. It was so distinct, so uniquely him-- Aqua could never forget the boy who had saved them all. Here? He was here? But how?

Sora had sacrificed everything to save Kairi, after all had been said and done. Aqua had not known him for very long, but like many others, had been touched by his light and keenly felt its loss. It wasn’t fair that he’d given them all a second chance at life at the expense of his own. It spoke to the strength of his convictions, to be sure... But he was so young. To know he had ended up here, this far from home? Aqua wasn’t sure to be alarmed or relieved.

❝Sora--?❞

She called his name, pushing her way through the people which stood between them. The closer she got, the more certain she was of his identity, heart racing in her chest-- The slightest crack in her composure. To be seeing him now almost felt like seeing a ghost.

The kid wasn’t unfamiliar but they didn’t exactly know each other, yet there he was being followed around like the mother duck of some little duckling. Clint glances over his shoulder at the boy and then sighs.
