Drawn Book Layouts
Moving closer to my final design choices I have now drawn out some brief scamps that explain the different layout ideas.
Layout 1: Standard portrait book with illustrations and text on opposing pages.
Layout 2: Flip out pages to add interest and complexity
My Outcome reflection
So far throughout this project I have been looking at many different elements of design and the different routes I could go down. To come to a conclusion and a clear direction from here on, I have decided to create a publication of the work I have done and created so far. Due to the nature of my project and the mapping of time, the idea of a clean, slick and professional book will work wonders for the illustrations and research I have already found. This is the point of my project where the research now fuels the final design process.
Here are three more info graphics taken from 2012 London Olympics showing the different disciplines in their different lights over the course of the games. They work well to describe the sport to people who wouldn't know otherwise. The design of them is really simple and too cluttered especially the setting of the type and the contrast within the background. They could look more at the aesthetics of them, otherwise they are really clever and well rounded.
Using Infographics within my subject area...
Here is an info graphic drawing I have done in relation to the pieces on the left to see how this is interpreted into gymnastics adverts. I personally like this piece however it is very generic and feels like I have seen it before even though it is a new piece of work. Later on in this book I have also looked back at this piece.
Human Infographic twist
Looking at how the human body is used within info graphics I have chosen this pieces to look at for it’s neat icons that make up the body. This piece explains the unique things that people have smuggled in the body, cleverly showing them in the amount values. By representing them as icons it makes the piece feel easier to read and navigate without feeling too cluttered. It is also good to see that there is a clear key to understand the colour theme across the piece.
In relation to my data I have collected, using icons to represent different elements could make the piece stand out and entice people to read on rather than navigate away from my subject matter. Also they are good to show small elements off.
Harry Beck - London Underground map designer
Designed in 1931, the London Tube map is one of the most highly used and influential pieces of info graphics designed by the one man Harry Beck. Beck was an English engineer draftsman and drew this up in his spare time. The London Underground committee didn’t see this as any use at first however little did they know it would be the way that most people use to navigate around the connection of tunnels under the Capital city.
Such an influential designer in general and it wasn't even his profession. The way that this has become something of an icon to London, countries around the world are attempting to copy this, yet never succeeded as well as this unique design concept.
Examples of some TASTY info graphics that I have been looking at in regards to the process of my professional project!
