Drawn Book Layouts
Moving closer to my final design choices I have now drawn out some brief scamps that explain the different layout ideas.
Layout 1: Standard portrait book with illustrations and text on opposing pages.

BOOK LAYOUT!!
Looking at the way that illustration and the book layout can be played around with i have now been looking at the way that these two can be used in conjunction with each other to create something visually pleasing. The different uses of them in each, makes the set complete and believable.

Now I need to make a list to see what I still have left to look at and research before the designing elemenets start to kick in and the new imagery starts to take its own form.

Paper Selection (so difficult to chose only two)
It’s all in the eye of the paper you use and the way that the different elements are put together make the book feel like a beautiful piece of design.
After having the talk from GFSmith representative I have collected a lot of the different paper samples already and have requested more to be sent out to try. The paper stock has to be the perfect thickness and touch to be able to put across my final elements as well as make the images look incredible.
MOHAWK NAVAJO
Mohawk Navajo from GFSmith is one of the brightest, smoothest uncoated papers available. Featuring the Inxwell treatment, it is optimised for both digital and offset printing. Navajo is Acid Free, made from 20% post consumer waste (PCW) and manufactured using Wind power.
MOHAWK OPTIONS
Mohawk Options is our range that offers the feel of an uncoated paper, while the Inxwell treatment optimises it for both digital and offset printing. It is available in a choice of Smooth or Vellum surfaces, it is Acid Free and manufactured using Windpower. Most of the Options range is made from 30% post consumer waste (PCW), but White Smooth PC100 is 100% PCW and Crystal White Smooth is 100% ECF Virgin Fibre.
MOHAWK SUPERFINE
Mohawk Superfine is our traditional smooth text and cover paper, designed for high-end corporate communications. However, being Acid Free it is equally appropriate for fine art applications where archival quality is required. The range features three white shades and a comprehensive selection of weights and finishes.
Let the designing commence!
Now that I have a good bulk of research under my belt its now the process of actually designing and making my final outcome which i have come up with and the different elements to look at in depth.
To go along with this is my mock ups I have created to understand the actually size of the book. I have decided to go for an unusual size for a handout book, 240mmx180mm.
I have looked at having a square page as well as the variation between the portrait and landscape view, however I think my own unique size will work better in this instance.
On the right are the examples of the different page constraints that I have looked at as well as mock ups to go with these.
The selection of publication designs i have selected have been in regards to the way that they are printed and the overall style that i am looking for within my own final outcome. Now that i have established i am creating a book, i wanted to see what was already out there and successful rather than just a piece of design. They all look spectacular and it looks more lovely due to the choices of paper stock. Never underestimate the power of paper, it can transform your project thoroughly.
This website is a god send to anyone looking at creating a publication and i think needs to be read by everyone who is design inclined as it runs through all the fundamentals.

To expand my own knowledge of the publication industry and how beautifully bound books are put together I have now gone more in to depth than I have done before to look at each aspect of the process to make sure I have thought through every design decision down to the way that it is bound.
My aim is to bind my book myself to make sure it is done correct and source the paper stock so all of the different elements are sorted and covered.
