By the time your first break at work tonight approaches, you think you and Lex have got this whole situation almost figured out. During your planning session with her last night, boundaries like, “No ‘I love you’s,” “If we go too far, the safe word is ‘dusk’,” and “If either of us want to back out at any time, we’re allowed to, no questions asked,” had been drawn. Before you could do anything else, however, Lex’s younger sister had called her. She’d taken the call in the next room and told you directly afterward that she had to go, reassuring you that you’d pick up where you left off at work the next night.
Well, it’s the next night now, and you’re more than ready to keep planning. You tell yourself it’s because of the anxiety a lack of proper planning instills within you, but deep down you know the real reason. Last night, you got a taste of what being with Lex would be like. Her lips, soft and surprisingly gentle against your own, sweet and exploratory and, eventually, hungry. You keep getting fixated on that last moment, Lex’s hand tugging you to her as if trying to pull you onto her lap. What would have happened if the pizza guy hadn’t interrupted you? Maybe she would’ve succeeded in her attempt. Maybe you would’ve ended up in her lap after all, Lex’s hands on your hips — or maybe your thighs. Maybe even—
Snap out of it.
Rubbing your eyes as if doing so could scrub the image of Lex underneath you from your mind, you decide you can’t wait anymore. In an unusual turn of events, it’s going to be you insisting on an early break tonight. You’re all ahead of schedule anyway; if Frank has anything to say about it, you’ll remind him of not only this but your vital role in achieving it as well.
It doesn’t take you long to find Lex. She’s straightening out some baby dolls on the shelf in front of her, humming to herself like she only does when she thinks no one’s listening. You’ve been lucky enough to catch it more than once. Her voice, deep and comforting, always brings a smile to your face. Tonight’s no different.
You take a second to try to decipher the tune. “Is that… ‘Hooked on a Feeling’?”
Visibly startled, she jumps, accidentally knocking a doll to the floor and, unfortunately, bringing the humming to an abrupt end. “Holy —” She clutches her chest as she turns to you. “For the sake of my poor little heart, announce yourself from now on.”
“Like a wrestler?” You chuckle, your smile widening as Lex joins you. It makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something worthwhile when you make her laugh.
“If I say yes, would you actually do it?” She asks as you crouch to pick up the doll before handing it back to her. She takes it with hopeful eyes.
You try to resist, but in the end… “We’ll see.”
She grins and turns to put the doll back up. “I’ll take it.”
“Anyway, I —”
“Now who’s the bad influence? I’m trying to work here, y’know,” Lex teases, throwing a playful gaze over her shoulder to show you she’s just messing with you.
You roll your eyes and take a step back. “Fine, guess I’ll just take my break all by myself…”
“Say no more.” The speed at which Lex passes you makes you laugh as you turn to follow her.
“So we’ve got the backstory,” you begin. You and Lex are sitting side by side, backs pressed against the wall out back. “We’ve got the boundaries.” You think for a second; it’s made more difficult by the slight pressure of Lex’s arm against yours. “Now we need to know each other.”
“We do know each other,” she points out.
“We know each other like friends know each other,” you correct. You can feel her eyes on you but there’s just something about her being so close that makes it difficult for you to meet those eyes, so instead you watch thin clouds slowly drift across the night sky. “But what would your girlfriend know about you?”
There’s a moment of silence where Lex’s eyes remain on you before she follows your gaze to the sky. “Good point. Hmm…” Subtly, she shifts, leaning into you a little. You chalk it up to your agreement to get more comfortable with casual affection. To make it all more convincing. That’s all. “I’ve got a beauty mark pretty high up on my inner thigh.”
“That’s —” Well, it’s technically what you meant, you suppose, and now you’ve walked right into Lex’s favorite pastime of flustering you. “I was thinking something like a secret you’d only share with someone you’re in a serious relationship with, but that definitely works, too.” You swallow, intently following the course of a small cloud. “Not sure that’ll come up in conversation, though.”
You hear her giggle, then feel her shrug against you. “You never know.” You’re about to offer your own piece of information when she speaks up again. “I want to move to California with Hannah someday.”
At this, you finally look over at her, curious and surprised. “What?”
It’s her who can’t meet your eyes now. She looks a little nervous, a rare sight for her. “That’s something I’d only tell someone I’m serious about.”
You furrow your brows. “Why’s it a secret?”
“I don’t want it getting back to my mom,” she answers with a sigh. “She’d guilt me into staying and I’d just add it to the list of things I hate her for and I’d spend the rest of my life struggling to get by and take care of Hannah.”
You nod in understanding. Lex has spoken to you a bit about her strained relationship with her mom. Negative parental relationships are kind of your specialty. “Hannah’s lucky to have you.”
She huffs a humorless laugh, eyes on the pavement now. “I dunno about that.”
“When things got bad with my parents and I went to live with my grandma, she didn’t have an easy time with it either. She had to go back to work. Wouldn’t let me get a job of my own to help out, though. She wanted me to focus on school, but she also wanted me to be able to stay a kid a little longer, I think.” You smile wistfully at the memory of her. At the feeling of Lex’s hand slipping into your own, you lace your fingers together and try to ignore the way your heart skips a beat. “We didn’t have a lot, but we had each other, and that was always what mattered most to me. The way you are with Hannah… Trust me when I say that she sees everything you do for her. She has a roof over her head, food in her belly, and unconditional love and support lifting her up, and she knows it all comes from you. And it matters, Lex.”
She squeezes your hand, conveying through touch what she isn’t saying with words. You get it. It’s hard for her to open up like this, even harder for her to accept that she is, in fact, good enough. It’s okay. You’ll tell her as many times as it takes.
You can tell, however, that she’s reached her limit for this particular subject, so you change it. “My parents kicked me out because they found out about my girlfriend. They tell people it’s because I was acting out, and I… I’ve never really told my side of it before. Not that I’m in the closet or anything; they pretend they’re okay with gay people so it’s not like I’d have to hide it anyway. They just don’t want it under their roof. That’s the part they don’t tell people about.” Your thumb begins to stroke the back of Lex’s hand, your eyes tracking the movement. “So there’s my thing I’ve never told anyone about.”
She looks at you for a moment. You raise your gaze to look her in the eye, furrowing your brows at the pensive look on her face. “I thought you were straight.”
Oh, yeah, you forgot about that. You laugh as you jokingly respond with, “I’m assuming the fact that I’m not isn’t a problem, all things considered.”
Lex smiles, but there’s still something in her eyes you can’t decipher. “No, definitely not.”
Something shifts, but you don’t know what. Before you can say anything else, though, Frank’s slamming the door open. “Figures I’d find you two out here,” he says disapprovingly, pointing a glare directly at Lex. “Lex, if you used more of your energy on presentation and less on lounging in the alley, I wouldn’t have to re-position all the toys in your section.”
“Won’t happen again, Frank,” Lex lies easily and immediately as she stands and begins to walk toward the door with you trailing behind.
When you enter your apartment at the end of the night, you enter it as Lex Foster’s official girlfriend. Lex’s bright idea to post a selfie of the two of you has already garnered more than enough attention judging by the way your phone keeps vibrating in your pocket. Finally, as you settle into your bed for the night, you open your phone to check your notifications.
Six Instagram notifications, two of which are from accounts you don’t recognize. One like is from Lex’s sister, Hannah, with an accompanying comment that only has a clock emoji. You furrow your brows. What does that mean? Nothing bad, hopefully. You know the relationship isn’t real, but still, you want her sister to like you, and you’d hoped the few times you’d met her at the store had left a good impression. One like is from your friend, Pete. The last notification is a comment from the man this entire charade is for — Ethan. It just says ‘wow’ with no capitalization or punctuation.
You scroll back up to look at the selfie again. Lex is the one holding the camera in front of you from behind your body, one arm outstretched to hold the phone up while the other lies loosely draped around your neck. With her lips pressed to your cheek and a caption that says, “What I need is the dandelion in the spring,” there’ll be no doubt in anyone’s mind the romantic nature of the photo — especially if they’ve read ‘The Hunger Games’, your favorite book series the one that that particular quote is from. That one was your idea; Lex has only seen the movies.
You close Instagram and open your messages. New texts from Pete and Lex both. You open Lex’s first.
[ Lex 11:24PM]: you free tomorrow?
You’re both off tomorrow. You were planning on getting some schoolwork done, but what does she have in mind? With furrowed brows, you respond.
[ You 11:32PM]: I’ve got homework. Why?
As you wait for a reply, you switch over to Pete’s message. Attached to his text is a screenshot of your photo with Lex.
[ Pete 11:20PM]: HELLO????
[ Pete 11:21PM]: Why didn’t you tell me you finally told Lex how you felt?????
You chuckle to yourself, even though you feel a little guilty. You’ve been so wrapped up in figuring out the details of all this, you forgot to tell your best friend.
[ You 11:33PM]: Because I didn’t. Whoops?
[ You 11:33PM]: It’s something she asked me to do to get Ethan to move on, that’s all.
As you’re about to type a third message, a new one comes in from Lex. You click it.
[ Lex 11:33]: what kind of homework? maybe I could help?
Arching a brow, you quickly type a response.
[ You 11:34PM]: Calculus.
The reply comes swiftly.
[ Lex 11:34PM]: immediately nevermind
You laugh to yourself as you type. Your gaze flicks to the incoming notification from Pete, but you ignore it for the moment.
[ You 11:35PM]: I’ll work on it tonight instead if you need me tomorrow?
You immediately see the three dots that signify that Lex is typing. For this moment, even though the two of you are miles apart, it feels as though you’re both here in the same space.
[ Lex 11:35PM]: i do need you.
[ Lex 11:35PM]: meet me at my place tomorrow?
You swallow, your face burning. Something about that first text… But no, you know what she meant. It’s an innocent statement. But why the period? Lex never uses those... You shrug it off; maybe it was a mistake.
[ You 11:37PM]: How does 2 sound?
[ Lex 11:38PM]: it’s a date ;)
Oh, that is not fair. Does she really have to flirt with you over the phone, too? Ethan’s not going to be checking her texts, is he? Your heart pounds in your chest as you try to think of a response.
[ You 11:41PM]: First date at your place, huh? You move fast.
Smooth. Totally smooth. Nobody reading this would know your heart’s threatening to bust out of your chest. Restless, you shift in your bed, turning onto your other side.
[ Lex 11:42PM ]: just the way my dandelion likes it.
Again with the period. And the nickname? That’s new. You’re reminded of the caption you’d chosen for that selfie and realize that’s where she’s gotten it from. There’s a fluttering feeling in your stomach that you’re finding hard to ignore.
[ You 11:44PM ] I’ll see you tomorrow, Songbird.
You’re not sure if the nickname will land, but you take the risk anyway. She’s seen the movies, and you’re not about to call her ‘Mockingjay’, so ‘Songbird’ just seemed like the most appropriate choice. It reminds you of the way you feel when you catch her humming — warm.
[ Lex 11:45PM ]: i like the sound of that
[Lex 11:45PM]: sweet dreams ;)
You spend a little more time than you’d care to admit re-reading the exchange before clicking the side of your phone to turn the phone screen off. If you want a free day tomorrow, you need to get to work, which means shooting Pete a quick ‘call you in a bit’ text before getting back out of your bed.
Tomorrow’s your first official full day as Lex’s girlfriend.
Synopsis: Lex needs to take her high school equivalency exam so they can leave Hatchetfield. Only there's one problem. No one's there to look after Hannah ever since Lex broke up with Ethan.
A/N: Please request more Angela characters! I love writing them. Also if someone requests an Angela fic I'll do that to.
Word Count: 849
Warnings: Asshole!Ethan (I'm soo sorry), Lex is canon she/they, cheating, crying, hand injury mentioned, swearing
Lex Foster had it rough. An asshole mother, a sister to care for, a shitty paying job, no high school degree, and on to top it off, she had recently broken up with her boyfriend when she found out he cheated on her.
Lex had made a rookie error in breaking up with Ethan two weeks before her high school equivalency test… Hannah. Her closest and only sister. Lex was a selfless person, but she was even more selfless when it came to Hannah.
They couldn't let Hannah go through what they went through with their mother. She couldn't let Hannah live in that trailer trash of a place, and so they didn't. They moved, and they were gonna move far out of Hatchetfield when she got the money to do so. The first step was that exam.
Lex Foster had to pass her high school equivalency exam.
That exam was an end goal, an exit, a sign that maybe something would go right in their life for once. That maybe just maybe she could leave and go to California.
However, at this rate it was looking like she wouldn't be even taking the test. Sure, they trust Hannah to be by herself and act responsibly, but having someone there was a safety barrier. A way to ease nerves, to not get her mind wandering about what her sister was doing.
And Lex could've done that before Ethan decided to cheat on them with Zoe of all people.
But now there was no one to watch Hannah for the day. And so, Lex was pissed off during her entire shift a Toy Zone.
You didn’t think too much of it. Toy Zone was hell, and everyone who worked there knew it. Arguably the worst job in Hatchetfield. It was also a Monday morning, which was an even big shit on top of the shit cake that was your job.
It was only when Lex didn’t meet you at in the break room for lunch that you started to worry. She was always there sitting next to you, talking to you before sharing a cigarette outback.
Concerned, you walked outside to find Lex sitting on the floor, her head in her hands.
You knew the Foster didn’t hear the door open because you knew that you would have definitely not have heard her cry.It was a shock to you even now. Hearing a muffled sob from your coworker.
You and Lex had never had that strong of a relationship. Until Ethan left her, she would only talk to you when she had to or at lunch, but ever since Ethan broke up with her they had attached themselves to you more. To the point, you got to know more about Lex in the last two weeks than you had in the year working with her.
Quietly walking over, you placed a hand on Lex's shoulder. Lex tensed up at the touch, she didn't know who it was but when she glanced up, her shoulder sunk.
"Are you alright?" You asked.Lex whipped her tears from her eyes and nodded her head. "Yeah, no, I'm fine."
You knelt down to her level, taking her hands in yours before stroking her palms with you thumb, making Lex let out another sob unwillingly. "What's wrong?"
Lex shut her eyes tight. "Hey, it's alright. You can talk to me." You squeezed her hands.
Lex looked at you, sniffling, "I'm sorry, it's soo stupid."
"No, it's not." You protested.
"Yes, it's it." Lex countered, avoiding your gaze. "It's just… You know the test I was talking about?" She looked up for your response and you nodded. "I can't do it anymore."
Furrowing your eyebrows, you questioned them. "Why? Are you scared because your gonna fucking ace it."
"I know that." Lex let out a quiet chuckle, a small smirk emerging on her face, before dropping again. "It's just Hannah, I don't know if I trust her by herself, especially after she hurt her finger at school."
"And so, you can't do it why? Because she's gonna be by herself." You asked, your gaze softening when you noticed Lex’s playing with her hands.
"Yeah."
"And what day is it?"
"Saturday."
"I'm off work, I'll do it." You offered.Lex’s eyes widened as she tried to comprehend your words. "Really?"
"Yeah, she's what 17? That's not too bad." You shrugged.
"She's 15."
"Slightly worse." You joked, making Lex laugh and your smile widening. "But no, I'll do it."
"You're amazing." Lex gushed, their cheeks flushing as she patted your legs. "Fucking thank you, I owe you something."
"No, you don't."
"It's a favour for a favour. You do shit more me; I do shit for you." Lex insisted. "I can cover a shift for you.
"Thinking it over, a small smile appeared on your face as you nervously suggested, "Or you could go on a date with me?"
Titling her head to the side, Lex smirked, saying, "That works."
"I fucking hope it would’ve." You chuckled, once again, holding onto Lex’s hands. “Shall we go get lunch?”

Spending time at the park with your friends and girlfriend
SUMMARY: When your coworker, Lex Foster, asks you to pretend to be her girlfriend, you agree against your better judgement.
WARNINGS: None that I can think of?
Toy Zone -- As many complaints as you have about the place and its owner, it was one of the only places hiring seven months ago when you desperately needed some extra cash to help pay for the online classes you were taking. It wasn't much -- and still isn't -- but it's enough to get by. Sure, there are other (arguably better) places hiring now. Sure, your boss, Frank, can be a bit of a jerk at times.
You've definitely thought about applying elsewhere a couple times, but the urge is always squashed not long after starting another shift. You can't imagine working somewhere else and no longer seeing Lex as much as you've grown accustomed to. If you could go back in time and tell your past self that Lex Foster, of all people, means as much to you as she now does, your past self would've checked you for a head injury or several. Although the two of you had attended the same high school (until she dropped out), the circles you'd each ran in had never intersected. As she affectionately teases you now, you've always been a bit of a nerdy prude.
Seven months into your job at Toy Zone, though, you've grown to really know -- and really like -- Lex. You love her dry humor, strong heart, and love for her sister. You love the way you can see her lock eyes with you over Frank's shoulder as he rambles on about the newest toy that's sure to fly off the shelves if you could just stock them faster, rolling her eyes before launching into a ridiculous imitation of him that you have to bite your lip not to smile at. You love the way she always waits for you to take your breaks together so that you can stand out back with her as she smokes, always making sure to blow it out away from you. You love the way her eyes light up when she talks about her sister, you love the way she cares so much about things even if she tries so hard to act like she doesn't, you love how strong she is, you--
You need to focus, and you definitely need to stop thinking about your coworker and friend so much, because the more you think about her, the more you realize your feelings are becoming more than simply platonic, which is a problem. It's a problem not only because Lex only just broke up with her boyfriend a month ago, but also because she's, as far as you know, straight. The risk of ruining this friendship you've grown to cherish is just too high. Besides, it would make working here too awkward when she inevitably rejects you, and then you really would have to look for another job.
"Come here often?" a playful voice sounds off behind you, the only warning you have before the owner of it is sliding between the stack of 'Sugar-Gliders' toys beside you and yourself. There's not a lot of space, however, so as Lex leans her shoulder against the shelf, you can feel her Toy Zone vest brush against your arm.
You glance at her as you finish straightening some of the boxes in front of you, an amused smile spreading across your face. "Considering I'm here almost every day, you'd think I would've made an impression by now. Now my ego's bruised."
"I'll kiss it better if you go on break with me now." The comment is an obvious joke, delivered as offhandedly as the multiple other flirtatious comments Lex has made toward you in the past couple months. Even if she doesn't mean it, it momentarily makes it harder for you to breathe nonetheless.
You laugh it off, trying to ignore the warmth you can feel in the tips of your ears. Picking up another box, you mull over her request. "I should finish stocking these first or Frank'll chew me out."
Even as you speak, she's plucking the box out of your hand before placing it back on the stack. "I'll tell him I made you do it; he already thinks I'm a bad influence on you."
"And you don't?" You raise your brows at her, your gaze lowering pointedly at the box she'd literally just taken out of your hand.
She scoffs, her hand flying to her heart. "You wound me, Y/N. Now I'm the one whose ego needs kissing."
Shaking your head, you step back out of her space. All this talk of kissing, joking or not, is making the close proximity way too overwhelming. Maybe a break would be a good idea after all. "Come on before I change my mind, drama queen."
____________________________________________
As you lean back against the wall out back, Lex doing the same a few feet away with a lit cigarette between her fingers, you can tell there's something on the shorter girl's mind. She's been unusually quiet, and you can see her glancing at you every few seconds out of the corner of your eye. You click the side of your phone, turning the screen dark as you slip it back into your pocket. "You okay?"
She almost seems startled when you speak, apparently not realizing how obvious she's been. "Oh, yeah, yeah. Just -- I've got this favor I gotta ask, and I'm trying to figure out how to ask it."
Well, now you're really curious. Lex has never asked you for anything other than occasionally covering a shift for her before. You turn to face her, leaning your shoulder against the wall. "People usually start by saying what the favor is," you joke in an effort to lighten the mood. It seems to work, the corners of Lex's lips quirking upward as she mirrors your movement and turns to face you.
"Okay, smartass." There's a pause as she takes a hit of her cigarette, the movement drawing your eyes to her mouth. You swallow, gaze quickly returning to her eyes. She doesn't seem to notice. "I need a girlfriend."
What the fuck? You didn't hear that right. You couldn't have. Your lips part but no words come out for a second, then two, then three. Then, "I-- And that's-- Huh?"
Apparently your stammering has put her at ease or something because she's chuckling now, taking another hit of her cigarette, and Jesus Christ does she have to be so hot when she smokes?
"Relax, Y/N. I know you're not into girls; I'm not really asking you out. It's just -- You remember Ethan, right?" There's another pause to take another hit, as if she's giving you time to remember him, as if you could forget the guy you'd been jealous of for months leading up to their break-up. "He keeps trying to get back together. He thinks if he just keeps trying, I'll come back to him eventually or something. I just thought maybe if he sees I've moved on, he'll give up."
Okay, so there's a lot to unpack there. You don't know where she got the idea that you're not into girls, but considering the one relationship you had in high school was a secret one with a girl deeply in the closet, you suppose you can't fault her for the assumption. You try -- and fail -- not to feel disappointed at the explanation that Lex isn't actually, truly asking you out for real.
She looks a little anxious again, watching you, waiting for your reaction. You know you should say no. This could really only end one of two ways, after all -- Either it ends in a fake break-up and you have to learn to live with the knowledge of how it feels to be loved by Lex but without the reality of it, or it ends with your real friendship becoming too awkward and loaded to survive.
But if you say no... If you say no, this guy keeps bothering her. If you say no, maybe she asks someone else, and as wrong as it would be for you to say yes, you don't want her to ask someone else.
"... Okay," you finally answer with a resolute nod.
"You totally don't have to," she's quick to reassure, dropping her cigarette and stomping it out before stepping closer to you. Despite her reassurances, she looks relieved with your answer. "I can ask someone else; I just-- I dunno, I don't really trust anyone else."
You give her a smile that you hope is just as reassuring to her as her words are to you, trying to ignore the way your heartbeat has begun to pick up speed. This is a bad idea. This is a bad idea. But it's for a good cause, right? That's why you're saying yes. No other reason. "Lex, it's fine. I'm happy to do it."
"Thank God." Another step closer brings her into your space, and before you know it, she's tugging you into a hug. You can smell the cigarette smoke sticking to her leather jacket coupled with the faint scent of the forest. It's got to be some kind of cologne or something, you think. The forest scent, not the cigarette smoke. "I really didn't want to have to ask someone else."
With one of Lex's arms firm around your waist and the other wrapped around your shoulders, you relax into her embrace and return it. Hopefully she can't feel the pounding of your heart against your chest as you reply, "Of course. What are friends for?"
SUMMARY: You and Lex work out some of the details of your fake relationship.
WARNINGS: None.
"Okay, rule number one -- I get to decide how we got together." You've quit pacing the length of your living room to speak, hands on your hips as you look down at Lex. She's sitting on your couch, feet kicked up onto your previously pristine coffee table, and as you speak, her gaze leaves the family portraits adorning the wall to focus on you instead.
Thirty minutes ago, you'd invited Lex to your apartment in order to work out the details of this whole 'fake relationship' thing. Despite Lex trying to assure you that you could just wing it, your insistence that preparation was the key to success had her finally agreeing to come over.
With a shrug, she responds, "Hey, less thinking for me."
"Another rule -- We need to agree on boundaries beforehand so neither of us are taken off guard."
"Boundaries?" She furrows her brows.
You gesture between you both. "Like, holding hands, kissing, stuff like that. How far are you expecting us to go to keep up this ruse?"
She appears amused by this, lifting her boots off of your coffee table and planting them firmly on the floor instead. Her legs are spread wide and your gaze is drawn to them for the briefest of seconds before returning to her face. Her head is tilted as she regards you curiously. There's something else in that look that you can't quite decipher. "How far are you expecting us to go?"
You feel heat creeping up your neck as the question is turned back around on you. You try your best to appear nonchalant when you respond, "However far you need us to. I'm doing this for you, after all; I just want to be properly prepared."
"We can't prepare for everything, y'know. Some things we're just gonna have to make up on the spot, and that's okay," Lex says in what is meant to be reassuring tone.
You're pacing again. "Yeah, well, I've never been good at that." The room falls silent as you become lost in thought, trying to think of every possible way this stack of cards could come tumbling down so you can prevent it from happening. You're so deep in your own mind that you don't even realize Lex has left her seat until she's standing in front of you, hands coming to gently but firmly grip your biceps in an effort to stop you in your tracks.
It certainly works, the sudden close proximity stopping not only your physical movements but every coherent thought in your head. You wait for her to back up but she stays. "Would it make you feel better if we practiced?"
"What?" God, you hope your face isn't as red as it feels, but the amusement beginning to light up Lex's eyes again are enough of an answer.
"You said you want to be prepared, right?" She raises her brows, and you nod. "So we practice. We tell each other how we got together so many times it starts to feel real. We get so comfortable touching and kissing each other that it looks natural to everyone else." As if to demonstrate, her hands slide up your arms, your neck, finally resting on your cheeks. She watches you intently, eyes switching focus between each of yours as if searching for something within them. You swallow.
"That's... actually a good idea," you say, a little distracted by her thumb stroking your cheek. Her hands are softer than you expected.
A smile spreads across her face. "I have one of those every once in a while," she jokes. It puts you a little more at ease, and you roll your eyes as you smile back down at her, forcing yourself to relax into her touch. It needs to look natural, not like you're freaking out on the inside. With a thoughtful hum, she adds, "I definitely asked you out. You can decide whatever else but we need this to be believable."
You scoff, pulling away from her in indignation as she laughs. "Anyway," you begin, attempting to divert attention from the fact that she's extremely correct, "since it seems like we're going to be here a while, do you want to order a pizza or something?"
The grin on her face tells you she sees right through you, but there's something else there that takes you off guard a little. There's a fondness in her expression for a moment; you barely see it as she turns to head back to the couch before dropping herself onto it. "It's like you read my growling stomach." As she speaks, she pats the seat beside her expectantly, raising her eyebrows at you.
You're nervous. You've sat beside Lex before, of course, but this feels different. Lex wants to practice, and maybe you didn't think it all the way through when you made the decision to let the woman you've been trying to suppress feelings for kiss you and touch you and call you pet names and --
"Y/N." Lex's voice is a beacon calling out to you before you can lose yourself completely in your overthinking. "I don't bite. Unless you're into that, then we could work it into the arrangement."
You let out a nervous chuckle as you finally move toward the couch. "Funny," you respond instead of giving her any kind of real answer. You know she isn't really looking for one anyway; she just enjoys flustering you.
You sit beside her and she turns to face you, folding one of her legs underneath the other and draping her arm across the back of the couch. Pulling out your phone, you and Lex take a few minutes to decide what you want. By the time you finally click 'order' and slip your phone back into your pocket, you think you've worked out how the two of you got together.
"We were working together after the store closed a week ago. We were on our lunch break out back, sitting against the wall, our arms touching. It was just like any other lunch break -- Talking about nothing and everything, making each other laugh. Maybe it was the peace of the early morning that made us open up to each other more that night or maybe it was just inevitable, but either way, something changed. We looked at each other, and our faces were so close... and feelings we hadn't realized ran so deep suddenly hit us all at once. You'd had the urge to kiss me before that moment but now it almost hurt to hold yourself back -- so you didn't. You kissed me, fully prepared to be pushed away, and I kissed you back. And now here we are." You finally turn your gaze toward Lex as you finish your story -- a story rooted in a very real moment from a week ago, one where it had been you who'd ached so badly to press your lips to hers after you had opened up to her about your struggles being pushed out by your parents and living with your grandmother instead (a lovely woman -- you have no complaints about her) until you moved out, after she had opened up about her struggles with her family and with trying to make it on her own while also supporting her sister. It really had almost hurt not to kiss her right then and there, but you had. You had torn your gaze away, focusing instead on the few stars you could see in the night sky.
When your eyes meet Lex's, you can tell she remembers that night, too. She's silent for a moment, just looking at you, and for that moment you begin to feel as though you've made a mistake. You'd thought that choosing a real moment would make the part that's a lie more believable, but now you're wondering if you've accidentally uncovered the truth about your feelings buried underneath it.
"Like this?" As Lex breaks the silence, her hand reaches up to curl into a fist around your shirt collar before tugging you toward her. Before you can react, her lips are on yours, her other hand tangling in the back of your hair.
A surprised, "Mmh--" escapes your throat, your eyes fluttering shut. Lex is kissing you. It's softer than you expected, especially after the rough tug at your shirt collar, and you lose yourself in it quickly -- in the name of practice, of course.
As your lips move against hers, her hand leaves your shirt collar to rest on your hip. What started out soft and even a little hesitant, as if testing the waters, begins to grow heated. Her tongue traces your bottom lip and you part your lips for her immediately. She tilts her head a little, her tongue sliding into your mouth to begin its exploration -- and God, it's thorough. You to moan into Lex's open mouth. Her hand on your hip tightens its grip, her other hand resting on the back of your neck and firmly holding you in place. Your hands come to rest on the sides of her face, fingers tangling in her hair as your tongue slides against hers. She groans into your mouth, her hand tugging at your hip now. Does she want you closer? If you get any closer, you'll be in her lap. Does she know that?
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
You break the kiss, pulling back as if you've just been burned. Out of breath and more than a little disoriented, you're relieved to see that you're not the only one in such a state. Lex is almost panting, licking her lips as she watches you. It's as your eyes follow the movement of her tongue that you realize your hands are still on either side of her face. You remove them, averting your gaze and standing before Lex can see how affected you are.
You clear your throat. "That was good -- good practice. You're good at that." You wince at your own words as you turn to walk around the couch, heading toward the door. "Anyway -- Pizza."
You have no idea how you're going to get through this.
