БРАТЬ
Lots of languages use prefixes and suffixes to make up verbs. In English for example we have phrasal verbs like come in and come out. They are antonyms and still are formulated from the same word come. It can also have a metaphorical meaning like in to come around. These in-s, out-s and around-s are suffixes. The example of prefix is come - overcome, like - dislike, write - rewrite. I’m sure everyone knows this.
The Russian language is also penetrated with such words and first of all verbs. Today I’d love to take a verb брать, which means to take. What prefixes does it have? Let’s conjugate it in case you see the verb for the first time. я беру; ты берёшь; она берёт; мы берём; вы берёте; они берут. It’s a group 1 verb. So, what are it’s related verbs?
Выбрать-выбирать = to choose (совершенный вид-несовершенный вид) Выбраться-выбираться = to get out, with из + Genitive case Взобраться-взбираться = to climb, to perch, with на + Accusative case Добраться-добираться = to get [somwhere], with на/в + Accusative Забраться-забираться = also to climb, with на/в + Accusative Избрать-избирать = to elect, with Accusative (выбирать is also with Acc.) Набрать-набирать = to gain, to type, with Accusative Отобрать-отбирать = to select, with Accusative Перебрать-перебирать = to sort out, to drink too much, with Accusative Перебраться-перебираться = to get over, to cross, to move, many prepositions possible, depeinding on a meaning, with Accusative Подобрать-подбирать = to pick up (from the floor/a dress), with Accusative Пробраться-пробираться = to steal up, with к + Dative Разобрать-разбирать = to analyse, to dismantle, with Accusative Разобраться-разбираться = to puzzle out, to deal with smth, with c + Ablative Собрать-собирать = to collect, to gather, with Accusative Убрать-убирать = to put out, to hide, with Accusative Убраться-убираться = to clean up, with на/в + Dative
Remember that the first column is used only in past and future tenses and has a meaning of a completed action, when the second column is about an action in process. All these verbs are conjugated in the same way, but differently from брать. In different conjugations prefixes and suffixes stay the same as an in the infinitive
