“what.”
a pause. then that low, velvet laugh you hated how much you liked.
“wow. so educated today.”
you closed your eyes, jaw tight. “did you call me just to critique my phone etiquette?”
“no,” she said, softer now. “i thought you’d be happier to hear from me.”
the honesty in her voice twisted something in your chest. you pressed the heel of your free hand against your forehead, breathing through your nose. tell her you’re busy. tell her you’ll call later. lie. lie.
instead you heard yourself say, “you want the truth or the polite lie?”
“it’s okay,” alexia murmured. “i already know the truth.”
you almost laughed. she had no idea.
she didn’t know what her voice did to you. how easily it found the places you’d spent days trying to quiet. she couldn’t see the way your nipples had tightened under your loose t-shirt just from the rhythm of her breathing on the line.
it was ridiculous. pitiful, even. one phone call, not even a full conversation, and your body was already betraying you. you pictured her somewhere else, maybe in her own house, hair loose. the mental image made it worse.
fuck.
you swallowed hard, forcing your voice to stay even.
“yeah, well… i’m about to go back on set,” you lied, even though you still had twenty minutes. “so if this is important—”
