Warning: Angst. (fem reader) Atsumu is the new love interest
*****×*****
You watched silently, thoughtfully and curiously as you boyfriend of six months talked to the pretty, round eyed, red head he always seemed to be around lately. She was just there somehow. Wherever he was, she was. And for some reason Kageyama never seemed to mind. He didn't like many people. You were an exception. One of the few exceptions. And you liked being an exception.
You and Tobio had known each other your whole lives. He was your best friend. Well had been anyway. The two of you had barely conversed in two weeks. You thought back to the first five months of your relationship they were almost a dream like, filled with endless laughter, soft looks, lazy mornings, quiet evenings. Somehow the setter became the favorite part of your day. He was a good boyfriend, a great boyfriend and you loved him. You've always loved him to be fair. But Kageyama always did like pretty things.
He was the best, so therefore he wanted the best and you.. You just weren't it. You weren't an All A student, you weren't as beautiful as the girls he'd dated before, you weren't athletic but those were never things that bothered you, that is until he started mentioning them "Babe you'd look so much nicer if you just did your hair correctly" "Honey if you just applied yourself more you'd get As. You're just lazy" "Did you see Aiko won best female volleyball player this year? Man what can't that girl do? "
That's where it all started. Hamada Aiko. She was gorgeous, valedictorian, Captain of the girls volleyball team and two years older than you so her and Kageyama were the same age. When you and Tobio were best friends, before you confessed, he'd always watched her, talked about her but you were too in love with him to let it bother you. But now it did. She'd left to compete professionally overseas and when she was back her and your boyfriend seemed closer than ever. You didn't mind their friendship at first but you drew the line at the longing looks they seemed to share, the small private jokes they made, the way he always seemed so excited to see her.
It was breaking your heart and you knew you were better than this. You could no longer let him bash at not only your pride but your heart. Which is why you were standing outside the gym waiting patiently to talk to your clueless boyfriend.
"Y/n!" Hinata called out as he entered the center. You watched as your boyfriends head snapped up and his eyes met yours, widening slightly, almost gulitly and you smiled softly. "Came to visit?"
You shook your head "Another time maybe. Kageyama can I talk to you?" He seemed to jerk at the sound of his full name and you saw Aiko lower her gaze, not bothering to look at you. Guess that confirmed suspicions.
"Sure Cmon" You followed him to the locker room and he sat on the bench, you sat opposite him. You needed distance. "What's wrong?"
You glanced at him. God he was pretty. All dark and brooding. Like a storm with little traces of a rainbow.
"We should break up" You were proud of yourself. Proud of you for knowing you deserved better. Proud of you for no longer allowing yourself to play the role of his naive pitiful girlfriend. He didn't say anything for a minute, his eyes fixated on his sneakers.
"Is that what you want?" He asked.
"No" You smiled sadly "But it's what's best for the both of us. I don't want to hate you Tobi. I care about you too much and I've known you for too long, and at the rate we're going baby, you're eventually going to resent me from keeping you from who we both know you actually want and I'm going to loath you for always making me feel like a second choice. So we should end it before it gets that far. "
"You know I never meant to hurt you right? . You're the last person in the world that deserves to be hurt. I'm sorry y/n. I really am. But me and Aiko-" He stood and took a step towards you but you turned away slightly.
"I know. I know you'll be happy with her. I only ever wanted your happiness" You nudged his shoulder "I have to go. I have an extra shift. I'll stop by the apartment later to fetch some of my things"
"Hey wait." He mumbled softly "You know you don't have to rush. I'm not kicking you out. Where are you going to Stay? You really don't have to move out right away. Get things sorted, find a place to stay or I will it's no big d-"
"No its your apartment. Plus I want too. I need the space Tobi. My friends been looking for a roommate and I guess this is a sign you know" You hugged him quickly and turned towards the door.
"Take care of yourself Kageyama."
"You too. You know you can call me if you need anything Okay? Anything at all. Don't hesitate" didn't want to lose your friendship.
But you didn't. You didn't call him in four months and Kageyama felt like he was slowly losing his mind. Three weeks after the two of you had broken up, he and Aiko had started dating. But it had felt wrong. On the outside they seemed perfect for each other but on the inside..
She wasn't you. And it had taken him too fucking long to notice that she never would be. She would never have the time to go to his games and wear his jacket in the stands, she hated listening to him talk about volleyball since she played the sport and already knew everything there was to know. She never ran her hands through his hair or kissed his forehead when he was feeling down and she would face her back to him every night instead of curling into him like what he was used too.
How did he manage to fuck up so badly? Oh that's right, he thought because he was a fucking asshole who was more worried about reputations than substance. God he missed you. Not only had he lost his girlfriend but he lost the most important person in his life.
"What do you want to drink babe?" Aiko asked as the two of you walked into the coffee shop. Your hands were joined but she never interlocked your fingers. She held your hand the way a people who didn't know know each other held hands. Palm to Palm.
"Coffee. Black" She nodded like it was totally understandable and he hated it. Hated the the fact that she didn't tease him about his order matching his personality or beg him to try a drink with a ridiculous name.
"Just try it!" His head turned so fast he nearly had whiplash and he felt like he was hallucinating. Maybe the sleepless nights were getting to him because There you were. Pretty as ever, with your hair down and your favorite green sweater. God were you always this radient? Then his eyes narrowed and Kageyama felt his heart physically drop at the sight of your fingers, interlocked, with someone else's.
"Y/n for the last time I'm not drinking anything that goes by the name Pinkity Drinkity" The man next to you laughed and kissed your forehead softly "You get it and I'll try it from you"
"And what happens if you like it? I'm not letting you have my drink" You snarked.
"Sweetheart If I actually do like this godawful named drink I'll order it the next time. By myself, I promise"
Kageyama watched the exchange with unease. That could have been me. He thought bitterly. Yeah if you weren't such an idiotic fucking jackass
Your eyes moved and finally found his and they widened slightly and he was surprised at the small smile that tipped at your lips.
"Kageyama" You approached him, the man at your side walking behind you like he was on guard. You brought both him and Aiko into small hugs . He always could read your eyes. It was a skill he'd mastered over the years and currently yours moved to his and Aiko hands and back to him almost as if saying 'I told you so'
"It's good to see you both! Uhm This is my boyfriend, Miya Atsumu. Baby this an old friend of mine and his girlfriend" You said cheerfully and Kageyama wanted the ground to swallow Him. Old friend? He loathed the term
"It's nice to meet you" The Miya twin said begrudgingly. Not smiling but rather staring at you waiting to see if you needed anything. God, Tobio thought, the man looked at you like he would throw himself in front of a train if you asked him too. It was what you deserved. You deserved that unconditional, irrevocable kind of love and he selfishly he wished it was him who had given it to you
"You too" Aiko said cheerfully and leaned into his side. She loved pda but never displayed affection privately, which funnily he thought resembled their relationship. Perfect around others, unbearable when the two of them were alone.
"Well we'll see you guys around. It would be great to catch up sometime" He knew you didn't mean it. You had cut him out of your life completely. He deserved it. He knew he did. But fuck. He watched as Atsumus blank gaze softened lightly when you smiled up at him and he ruffled your hair lightly.
"Bye" I miss you, he said with his eyes. Come back to me
"Bye" I'm happy now, you said back. It's too late.
And Kageyama felt his heartbreak for the second time in four months but somehow this time he didn't know if it was capable of being put back together
