Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Up From the Sea by Leza Lowitz

This is the story of a boy named Kai who is living in a Japanese coastal village when the earthquakes and tsunami of 2011 hit the country.  This is a moving story already, and the decision to tell it through a series of poems means that words are used sparingly but also more powerfully.  This is a tragic story that is based on real events that happened in the lifetimes of our teen readers. 

The emotional connection between these events and the 9/11 attacks in New York City is brought home when Kai and other survivors of the tsunami are brought to New York to visit Ground Zero and meet some of their American counterparts to talk about how these tragedies changed their lives. 

This is a memorable book with great tearjerker potential.

The Weekly WORD, Brooklyn

Starting off April the right way, with a bunch of amazing book events!  On Monday we have the pleasure of hosting a launch event for Jesse Jarnow’s new nonfiction book Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America (4/4).

On Wednesday 4/6 Jarrett Kobek and Chelsea Hodson will be in conversation re: Jarrett’s latest, I Hate The Internet.  

And for young adults and not-so-young YA fans, Leza Lowitz will be reading from her book Up From The Sea, inspired by her experiences during the 2011 Tsunami in Japan.

Friday night (4/8) you can catch WORD selling books at Housing Works Bookstore for Larry Kramer’s conversation with Bill Goldstein about American People, Vol. 1 (more info on that here) or you can stop by our Greenpoint location to catch a sweet original stage adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland courtesy of Threadbare Theatre.
