PSA - THE NETHERLANDS
This is an important announcement for those who still think the Netherlands is 'openminded' and 'progressive'.
People seem to be under the impression that the Dutch people don't care if you're part of the LGBT+ community--live and let live, all that.
There must have been an error in translation somewhere, because the truth is that a large part of the Netherlands doesn't care *for* the LGBT+ community; along with other issues like rights or rape culture.
"The man is and will stay the boss. In my opinion. Complete control over the little wife."
"Jokes about a rape incident? Wow"
"Seriously, you believe that? I don't believe any of it, it's all attention seeking is what it is."
"Yeah yeah, that guy is just looking for attention. Fuck off man"
"I hate faggots, it's not natural, your head's not on right. It's man and woman and not mam and man or woman with woman you have two genders and they are meant for eachother."
The equivalent of 'faggot' is one of the most commonly used insults in the Netherlands. So many people are afraid to come out for fear of getting bullied or beaten up or isolated. There are still no accepted Dutch genderneutral pronouns or even an equivalent.
My school barely even has sex ed! Let alone discussion about safe same-gender sex. Schools and organizations seem to avoid the topic of the LGBT+ community as well as they can, which is incredibly harmful for kids who are only just finding their identity or students who know they're different but don't know why.
The Netherlands is not an accepting, progressive country. Not by a long shot.
I'm sorry for the long post, but this is something that needs to be made known. Please share this and spread awareness. Things need to change.
