“I don’t want to hear anything from you.” Verity’s palms were starting to sweat; her shoulders ached from stretching to hold down both levers at once. “You’ll regret this,” Miss Minutes warned, all pretences dropped. “When Ravonna hears about this, you’ll be fired. You know what that means.” She zoomed closer, filling Verity’s field of vision. “You won’t exist,” she hissed. “Your counterpart will be out of a job. Your daughter won’t get the medical care she needs to stay alive. All because of your selfishness.” She jabbed an accusing finger in Verity’s face. Verity’s eyes filled with tears. “You’re lying,” she whispered. “Am I?” Another violent kick to the door rattled the walls.
