Found while visiting the Queens Botanical Gardens on what was a particularly warm day. Found this guy out and about. They were very cooperative and mostly tolerated me getting close and taking pictures.

The Endangered Monito Island Gecko Recovers

This year the Monito Island Gecko was taken off of the Endangered Species List, as their numbers have recovered from only 18 in 1982 to over 5000 individuals now. The small lizard is found only on the NW area of Monito island, near Puerto Rico. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service worked to remove non-native introduced Black Rats from the island (introduced by the US Navy accidentally, shortly after WWII), which were decimating the geckos and their eggs.
