Doing journal statistics for end of year at work, and I have a Spiders Georg joke locked and loaded for the statistics because we DEFINITELY have an outlier. But spiders Georg is only funny if you’re a tumblrina and so I can’t share with my coworkers, but it’s also only a good spiders Georg joke if you’re familiar with the journals my work publishes. So. The audience for this joke is just…me. I am extremely sad about this.
Anyway. Here it is because I am dying to share it even if no one else gets it. Somewhat doxing myself too but no one pays attention to my posts anyway.
“Average Florida OJ journal gets 50k article views a year” actualy just statistical error. EDIS Georg, which has over 10k articles and gets 2million views per year, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

I am about to begin my 20th Annual Library Report. I’m a tad vague about who is going to actually read the thing, it will go to headquarters of course and they will send it on to Public Library Services Branch and from there it will be used to justify our continued existence.

And in librarianship, there is a lot of data that are simply counts — reference questions, book use, journal use, citations, attendees at workshops, Twitter posts, students who graduate or stay in school or dropout. And these are not distributed normally. This data is severely skewed, usually to the right (think “long tail”). And the variance (standard deviation) is much greater than the mean – that’s because of the long tail, all those very high counts. How the heck are you supposed to analyze that?"
