My thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book, I honestly have no critical notes. I wish it was longer but it is perfect as it is. The pacing was well done, world building is just right for the length of the book. The “monsters” all have Polish names so I did look those up but you can go without as she provides descriptions for them. I really enjoyed her integration of Slavic folklore, it was very cool to read as I’ve never read any stories with it. Now I want to visit Poland lol (and hopefully one day I will).

I liked the characters a lot, they feel real and mature and I loved the bonds that form. The way their emotions were expressed was well done and well formed. The romance was very sweet but it was quite a small presence in the story which I don’t personally mind since it was a short book (also! queer romance 😌)

The story itself was great. Veronica Roth does a really great job with the imagery and descriptions of magic. I recommend it for those looking for a short, immersive, very well written fantasy :)
