So many of these characters had horrible childhoods, but let's not forget about Lily.
Lily, who had to grow up too quickly. Who feels like a burden on her family, using what little money they have on tuition, textbooks, uniforms, etc. Whose family can barely afford to eat so she can eat three meals a day in a literal castle. Who can't even get a job to help out, knowing that her little sister works two to make up for it. Her little sister, who has always been disgusted by her for being born different.
Lily, who pushed herself to be the best in her class, even when she could hardly take it. Lily staying up too late, agonizing over every assignment and reading. Lily thinking that maybe one day she can make up for all of it. Responsible, respectful Lily, who's "so mature for her age" and "sure to make it far", but who's also "stuck up" and a "buzzkill".
And then Lily, who lets herself fall for someone who never makes her feel like a freak or a burden. Someone who takes the weight off her heart and her shoulders so she can feel like everyone else. Someone who encourages her to be childish and carefree and whatever else she wants to be. Who doesn't expect her to be perfect, because they think she already is.
